Colorado Kansas Quotes
October 22, 2005 | Football
Colorado Head Coach Gary Barnett
General
“There were a lot of things that occurred in the game. Some you like and some you don't like. Penalties continued to be an issue for us. I think the whole game turned around with special team. Our punt block team, the return by Dominique Brooks. It's amazing how he had a fumble return for a touchdown last year against Kansas and gets one this year. I think the biggest play was the fake field goal which let us get on the board early. Special teams just really got us over the hump.”
“We let the first half get away from us. I think this was one of those situations where coaches know more than the players know during the week about their opponent. I don't think we'll have that problem anymore. I could tell in warm-ups and everything off the field going into that game. At half-time we had a real heart to heart and they came out and made some plays. I was proud of the way we came out of the second half. I liked our energy the second half. A lot of guys made some big plays.”
On Special Team
“We always go in with a fake on PAT field goals with Mason. You don't ever want to use it, you don't think you'll ever have to use it. The punt block we really went in, I didn't think we could block one really. But we wanted to put pressure on him to see if we could get him to kick the ball poorly. We really had a return set up. More than anything we challenged our punt block team because we really had been ineffective. We really challenged them this week and they really stepped up. They put a lot of pressure on that punter all night. I was really proud of them.”
The Fake Field Goal
“The fake field goal, the timing was just right to do it. They gave us the look and even not having enough guys on the field, calling a timeout probably helped us in the situation because I wasn't going to sent it in the first time. I sent it in the second time.”

“We're a team that has a lot of injuries. We had five guys go out of this game with injuries that couldn't come back. That really scares me. As we proceed into the next four games, Alex Ligon, Walter Boye-Doe went out and came back for a little bit. Ryan Walters went out and we lost Edwin Harrison. We're just really running out of guys. That's what I'm scared of more that anything else. We have a team that flies around after the ball and on offense we've got some guys that make some plays. The tight ends make some plays.”
On
“We struggled running the ball. We went three straight snaps with one yard. We had a yard to go and we couldn't get it. So
On QB Joel Klatt
“We would not be 5-2 without Joel Klatt. We would not have been 8-5 a year ago without Joel Klatt. You don't get a quarterback like that very often.”
Kansas Head Coach Mark Mangino
General
“I thought CU played a real fine football game in all areas tonight. They are a very good football team, and I thought watching them on video tape, and now I saw them first hand and that's a good club. You can't judge them by the
On the Play of CU Tight Ends Joe Klopfenstein and Quinn Sypniewski
“One of them had a busted zone coverage. We know they are there, and we have to cover them whether it's zone or man, and apparently we didn't do that.
On the Energy that QB Jason Swanson Brought to KU
“I don't know that there was energy when he first went in. I think the first series the kids were concerned what the situation would be (with Luke's injury). We knew Swanson would get them rallied. He took control of the offense right away. As you can see he has good touch. He can throw the ball pretty decent. He had a few throws off target we protected him reasonably well, we missed a couple of blitzes, but I thought that as the game went on the kids got excited and gave him a lot of confidence, and I think the energy started to build up and you saw that off the bat.
On QB Brian Luke's Injury
“I came here with the intention of Brian Luke playing the game. But I'm not at all concerned with Swanson. In fact I'm pretty excited about him. I think he got throws off and had some reads we haven't had all the year. He's going to have to do something awfully wrong between now and next week to not start the game.”
On Halftime Talk
“I told them that the defense was going to have to play very well, we felt like we were doing pretty good on offense, but the special teams really put us in the hole. And that's what hurt the most.”
On Energy
“I thought our kids played hard, like they always do.”
On
“We played a good football team. I don't want to take anything away from
On Rollout Pass Play on 4th and 1 In the First Quarter
“We knew they were going to play the run really hard, and we just wanted the play action to get a dump off the flat but we had a mix up with one of our offensive lineman. One of the young kids that hasn't played much. But that's alright, and we'll learn from it.“
WR/PR Stephone Robinson
On punt return for touchdown- “This week Coach Barnett continued to challenge the punt unit to step up our play. I think our 16 points tonight help prove what we can do and now it is just a matter of developing more consistency. It's been tough this year on punt returns because I've had a couple of long ones called back on penalties, or I've slipped, or I've been one block away from breaking it. And tonight it was just time.”
On getting to play WR- “It's been great to get out there and play a few snaps at wide receiver. I've been working hard, so it's nice to get out there.”
QB Joel Klatt
On setting CU's all-time touchdown passes record- “I've always said that those type of records take longevity and a little bit of luck. It feels really good to be considered in the class with all the great quarterbacks before me. What was really most important was to get the win. Tonight was a great example of responding well to coach and what he had to say at half time.”
On Joe Klopfenstein- “Having Joe around is an awfully big luxury for me to have around because he is able to do so much. We can put him absolutely anywhere on the field and he will make plays for us. He catches the ball really well and after he gets it he can run with it. Just like he did tonight when he stepped out of that defenders arms and scored the touchdown.”
On Quinn Sypniewski's touchdown- “Joe isn't the only one that is able to make plays for us. On Quinn's touchdown we had a double tight-end set. There was blown coverage on
On touchdown pass to Dusty Sprague- “We've been trying to get that play to work for a couple of weeks now and we felt like this defense gave us the opportunity to make the play. That play takes great protection because it takes some time to develop and the execution today was what it needs to be to work.”
On the rest of the season- “We really need to continue to take care of our own business because we control our own destiny, and working hard and executing could take us to
On setting CU's record for most touchdowns for as a TE- “I was really, really surprised to hear that I was even close to that record. But just like with every record, what matters most is getting the win and making the team better.”
On the penalties- “We weren't able to move the ball too well at points because of penalties. We don't have plays for third and 25 or third and 30. Fortunately we were able to come up with the big plays tonight.”
S Dominique Brook
General comment- “It felt good just to be out there. I've been out for a few games and just being out on the field makes me feel great.”
On punt return for touchdown- “I think the punt unit took the challenge from the coaches well and touching that zone is something always feels so good.”
OLB Brian Iwuh
On giving up first half points- “At the beginning we really weren't playing our defense and controlling the game like we wanted to. We finally settled down and started playing well and started to control the game. It all started with our run defense. I like that we didn't give up very many rushing yards tonight because we take pride in our run defense. We don't want anyone to run the ball on us because it makes the unit look soft and we are not soft.”
On forcing three turnovers- “Turnovers are always so big and any time we can force more turnovers than them, we feel like we will win the game. Tonight the Buffaloes took advantage of their carelessness.”
On big hit on Kansas QB Jason Swanson- “It felt good just to get one out. I've been waiting all year for one like that. I've been waiting all year and hopefully I'll get a few more before the year is up.”

DE Charlton Keith
GENERAL ? “We started really slow this evening. Coach (Mark Mangino) told us all week that we needed to set the tempo early, but after a couple of their big plays, we lost our mental edge and had to play by their tempo. This game is all about being a team. Whether you're on special teams, the kicking team, or defense, you have to come out here and do your job. The second you let up, you can see what happened, and our team let up a few big plays when we weren't into the game mentally.”
ON OFFENSIVE PLAY ? “The offense played really great today. They improved on all the small things that had gone wrong the past couple of weeks. The offensive line pass-blocked really well and run-blocked a lot better than the last couple of weeks. They made big play after big play and showed everyone what they're really capable of doing.”
ON MOOD OF TEAM ? “We've got a great group of guys on this team and we especially have great leadership. We have to let this game with CU go behind us because coming up this week is a huge rivalry game for us versus Missouri. We have to be ready for that game and we have to get back on track.”
WR Mark Simmons
ON BREAKING RECEIVING RECORD ? “It's nice to get the record for myself, but I would always rather have wins. Wins don't get erased from the books, but records will always be broken. All I really want to do is win this year and get into a bowl game.”
QB Jason Swanson
GENERAL ? “We will approach this week as we do every week. I will watch film, make the team believe and execute. I have to credit Colorado. They made a lot of plays. We did too, but I threw a few interceptions. I'm not shaken -- everyone throws picks. We can play with anybody. We showed tonight we can score a touchdown against anyone in the conference.”
ON SEASON DEBUT ? “I felt I played okay. I tried to stay focused and my teammates kept me calm and in the game.”
ON HALFTIME ATTITUDE ? “We were really excited going in to the half even though we were down. We were yelling, screaming, really pumped up.”
ON WHAT'S KEPT HIM OFF FIELD ? “I had an injury and I just haven't been 100 percent. I've had a lot of nagging injuries. I'm just as comfortable as the last time that I played. I'm not rusty because I've been practicing a lot. I'm a football player.”
ON OFFENSIVE LINE ? “They did a great job. They protected well, ran-blocked well, and made their checks. They played a heck of a game.”
