Women's Soccer Stampedes UNC 3-0
October 09, 2005 | Soccer
GREELEY, Colo. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team continued their recent goal scoring ways here Sunday afternoon, defeating the University of Northern Colorado by a score of 3-0. It marked CU head coach Bill Hempen's 50th win at Colorado.
Â
"What I told the kids is that what we did this weekend was pretty special," said head coach Bill Hempen. "We play a tough game at Texas on Friday night, come home very early Saturday morning, and prepare yourselves to play a team you should probably beat that is really jacked up to play you."
Â
UNC indeed came out of the gates really fired up, getting three corner kicks in the first five minutes of the game.
Â
"It took us awhile but we righted ourselves," said Hempen. Â "It wasn't a perfect game for us, but we did finish. After the first 10 minutes we had control of the game."
Â
The Buffaloes got their first goal of the game from senior Hermann Trophy candidate Fran Munnelly, who scored her team high seventh goal of the season at the 20:59 mark of the first half. Munnelly took a pass from Allison Kidd who was streaking up the left side and hit a hard shot on a one timer. Freshman Nikki Keller also assisted on the goal with her pass to Kidd to set up the play.
Â
Halftime would wrap up with Colorado leading 1-0, the Buffs getting off eight shots to UNC's two. Jessie Keller made her only save of the contest in the first half on the Bears' only shot on goal of the game, off the foot of Marika Johnson.
Â
The second half would see two goals from the Buffaloes. The first goal came from junior Katie Griffin and was unassisted. Griffin took a cross that was deflected and then hit a one-time shot across the goal from left to right to give CU a 2-0 lead at the 63:10 mark. It was her sixth goal of the season.
Â
The third goal of the game was again from Munnelly, this time coming off a set piece. The UNC defense committed a foul in front of their goal, setting up the direct kick for Munnelly. She converted with a well placed shot with less than seven minutes to play, at 83:34, for her eighth goal of the year.
Â
Munnelly now has goals in three straight games and either a goal or assist in the last six consecutive contests for Colorado, and has 30 career tallies under her belt. She is CU's all time leading goal scorer.Â
Â
Colorado fans will have their last chance to see CU's outstanding senior class play at home this weekend. CU first takes on Missouri this Friday at 3 p.m. Then Colorado (7-5-2, 3-2 Big 12) will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, October 16 at 1 p.m. against defending Big 12 Champion Kansas. The Buffs' senior class of Kathryn Grandinetti, Jessie Keller, Ashlie Mihalcin, Fran Munnelly, Tricia Regan and Darci Smerchek will be honored. All CU women's soccer home games are played at Prentup Field and admission and parking are free.
