Copeland and McFarland Score Athlete of the Week Honors

BOULDER-- Senior men's basketball forward Chris Copeland and fellow basketball player (women's sophomore forward) Jackie McFarland were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week.

Copeland, a Richmond, Va. (Hermitage) native, scored a game-high 20 points that included 8-of-9 from the free throw line helping Colorado win it's 2005-06 season opener, 73-54 over previously unbeaten UNC-Wilmington. The win also improved the Buffs' record in season openers to a perfect 10-0 in openers under Ricardo Patton. Copeland, a 6-8 forward scored 10 points in each half; he also recorded five rebounds, two blocked shots, one steal and made five of his six shots from the field.

 

McFarland, a Derby, Kan. (Derby) native, helped lead in a new era in Colorado basketball with her 34 point and 20 rebound performance in CU's 100-71 victory over Cal State-Fullerton. McFarland also contributed one assist, one block and five steals as the Buffs won their season opener and Kathy McConnell-Miller's regular season debut as head coach.

 

The other nominee for this week's award was: Amber Sutherland (volleyball).

 

Volleyball: Amber Sutherland, Sophomore, Glenwood Springs, Colo.

Sutherland helped the Buffs to two, five game contests this past week.  Despite losing both, she averaged 4.50 kills, 1.90 digs, 0.30 blocks and hit .375.  Against Kansas State, she hit a career-high 26 kills and recorded a .476 hitting percentage.  Sutherland collected a double-double against Texas A&M as she tallied 19 kills and 12 digs.
