November 29, 2005 | Cross Country, General, Men's Basketball
BOULDER - Sophomore men's basketball guard Richard Roby and senior cross country standout Christine Bolf were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week, for the week of Nov. 21.
Roby, a San Bernardino, Calif. (Lawrence Academy) native, averaged 19.5 points and five rebounds during his two games helping Colorado to a 1-1 record. The Buffaloes lost at Colorado State, 83-82, before defeating Saint Mary's, 73-54, at the Colorado Classic in Denver. Roby scored a game-high 29 points with four 3-pointers and three steals over the Gaels. The 29 was one point away from tying his career best. Roby is the team leader in points (17.7), rebounds (5.7) and steals (2.4). Roby and the rest of the men's basketball team will be in action tonight when they travel to Philadelphia to take the Quakers of Penn.
Bolf, a Los Angeles, Cailf. (Notre Dame Academy) native, led the CU cross country team to a 2nd place finish at the NCAA Championships. The Buffs bested the top-ranked Duke Blue Devils by four points to earn the runner-up finish. Bolf ran the 6k loop in a personal best 19 minutes and 59 seconds and placed seventh overall. It was the best finish for Bolf at a NCAA Championship.
Others nominated for this week's award were: Brian Iwuh (football), James Strang (cross country), Jackie McFarland (basketball), and Amber Sutherland (volleyball).
Football: Brian Iwuh, Senior, Houston, Texas
Iwuh played every snap on defense (90 plays), registered 10 tackles, including eight solo and a quarterback sack in Saturday's loss to Nebraska. He also recorded three third down stops, three quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and deflected a pass.
Men's Cross Country: James Strang, Sophomore, Signal Mountain, Tenn.
Strang led the CU men to a fifth place finish at the NCAA Championships. He ran the 10k loop in a personal best 30 minutes and 17 seconds. His 27th place finish was the best finish at the event for Strang and the first time he has been the top CU runner at any event.
Women's Basketball: Jackie McFarland, Sophomore, Derby, Kan.
McFarland had 21 points as Colorado defeated Utah State 71-56 in the consolation game of the 19th Annual Coors Classic tournament. McFarland scored in double digits for the fourth-straight game, the best streak of her career; as she hit 7-of-11 from the field (.636), a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, and added five rebounds, four assists and four steals to earn Coors Classic All-Tournament team honors. In their opening round match-up, McFarland recorded her third-straight double double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds as the Buffs fell to eventual champions Northern Iowa 74-65 in overtime. She also added one block and four steals in the losing effort.
Volleyball: Amber Sutherland, Sophomore, Glenwood Springs, Colo.
Sutherland helped the volleyball team to a 1-2 week, with the two losses coming to top ranked Nebraska and fourth-ranked Florida. Sutherland averaged 5.11 kills, 3.33 digs and hit .444; all team highs over the three matches. She amassed 46 kills in just nine games, notching 19 kills against Northern Colorado, 14 versus Nebraska and 13 against Florida. Sutherland stepped up her performance against Nebraska to help fill the void without Allie Griffin (who did not play due to injury).
