December 13, 2005 | General, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
BOULDER - Sophomore men's basketball guard Richard Roby and fellow sophomore and women's basketball standout Jackie McFarland were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week, for the week of Dec. 5. This is Roby's third athlete of the week honor in as many weeks, while McFarland has notched the honor three of the last four weeks.
Roby, a San Bernardino, Calif. (Lawrence Academy) native, recorded his third career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, helping Colorado defeat Utah 76-52 in their lone game of the week. The win was the Buffaloes' fourth in a row and improved their overall record to 5-1. The 6-6 guard has led CU in scoring the last four games; he went 7-of-17 from the field and connected on four 3-pointers against the Utes. Roby is averaging 21.8 points per game over his last four and leads CU in scoring (18.5), rebounding (6.3) and steals (2.0). Roby and the rest of the Buffs will try to continue their winning ways this Saturday (Dec. 17) when they host UC-Irvine, 7pm MST, at the Coors Events Center.
McFarland, a Derby, Kan. (Derby) native, scored 26 points in an 84-57 victory over the Pacific Tigers. She hit 8-of-13 from the field and 10-of-15 from the free-throw line, marking her second-straight game with 10-plus made free throws. The 6-3 forward also added eight rebounds, two assists and four steals in CU's only game of the week. McFarland and the rest of the CU women's basketball team will be in action starting next Monday when they travel to Puerto Rico for the San Juan Shootout.
No other athletes were nominated for this week's award.
