Roby and McFarland Named CU Athletes of the Week

December 06, 2005 | General, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball

BOULDER-- Sophomore men's basketball guard Richard Roby and fellow sophomore basketball standout Jackie McFarland were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week, for the week of Nov. 28. This is Roby's second athlete of the week honor in as many weeks; while McFarland has now notched the honor two of the last three weeks.

Roby, a San Bernardino, Calif. (Lawrence Academy) native, led CU to a pair of victories during the week, averaging 19.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game with wins over Penn (78-60) and Cal Poly (93-75). The 6-6 guard scored a game-high 22 points at Penn that included five assists and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. At home against Cal Poly, Roby tied for high score honors with 17 points while grabbing seven rebounds. He also shot a combined .533 from the field (12-of-23), .750 from the 3-point arc (6-of-8), and an impressive 9-of-10 from the free throw line (.900). During the last four-game span, Roby had made 15 straight free throws. The Buffs are 4-1 on the season and have won three in a row. Roby and the rest of the men's basketball team will be in action again tomorrow night when they play host to Utah (Coors Events Center, 7pm MST, Fox Sports Rocky Mountain).

McFarland, a Derby, Kan. (Derby) native, was one of four Buffs in double digits, dropping 19 points in a losing effort against CSU.  She also added nine rebounds, two assists and one block.  For the second-straight game, Colorado fought back from a double-digit deficit in the second half, only to fall short as Creighton staved off a furious Buffaloes rally for a 77-72 decision. The 6-3 forward led Colorado with her fourth double-double in six games this season, registering 23 points, a game-high 12 rebounds, four assists, one block and three steals.  McFarland and the rest of the women's basketball team will be in action this Thursday (Dec.8) when they play host to Pacific (Coors Events Center, 7pm MST).
