Cortney Hutmacher Named CU Athlete of the Week

BOULDER-- Sophomore thrower Cortney Hutmacher earned CU Athlete of the Week honors after second place honors with a throw of 60-3.75 in the weight throw at the Don Barrett Air Force Open.
The Killdeer, N.D., native established a new personal record and bested an eight-year old school record in the event for the second time this season. She bettered her previous pr by 2-2.75 and the original school mark of 55-3 by Janet Visosky in 1997.
Hutmacher and the rest of the Colorado indoor track and field team will be competing in the ninth annual Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships this Friday and Saturday, Feb.25-26 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. The multi-events will kick off the weekend event Friday at 8:30 a.m. (MST), followed by the running (2 p.m.) and field events (1:45 p.m.)
Others nominated for this week's CU athlete of the week award were Kendra Strandemo (women's tennis), and Veronica Johns-Richardson (women's basketball).
Women's Tennis: Kendra Strandemo, Senior, San Diego, Calif.
The senior won a pair of singles matches during the week helping CU achieve a 1-1 record during non-conference play. Strandemo won her No. 2 singles match in straight sets helping the Buffaloes upset No. 48 Western Michigan, 4-3. CU came up short in their second upset bid during the weekend at No. 35 Illinois, 4-3. Strandemo improved her dual spring record to 7-1, in addition to winning her 65th and 66th career matches, becoming only the 15th CU women to win that many in a career. In doubles, she teamed with sophomore teammate Martina Sedivec at No. 1 in a win over Western Michigan. After eight dual matches, the CU women are off to their best start in six years with a 6-2 record and a No. 59 national ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association team poll.
Women's Basketball: Veronica Johns-Richardson, Senior, Fullerton, Calif.
The senior point guard dropped 11 points in a 77-61 loss to Oklahoma. She also contributed six rebounds, two assists, three steals, while logging 35 minutes of playing time, second on the team. In a 73-51 losing effort to No. 18 Kansas State Veronica Johns-Richardson led all Colorado scorers with 14 points. She also aided CU with four rebounds, four assists, and one steal while leading the Buffs with 40 minutes of playing time. CU falls to 8-16 overall, 1-12 in the Big 12.
