McGlasson Named CU Athlete Of The Week
February 08, 2005 | General, Men's Golf
BOULDER - Junior golfer Edward McGlasson earned CU Athlete of the Week honors after setting a school record when he recorded a 63 in the second round of the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Arizona over the days of Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
The Orange, California (Elmodena) native broke the 15-year old school record set by John Nyuli in the 1989 Wyoming-Red Jacoby Invitational by one stroke when he carded his 63. The round, which was also complicated by being played over two days, was 8-under par on the 6,793-yard, par 71 Arizona National Golf Club course, topping the old school best of 7-under par which had been accomplished on three occasions. The first was by Hale Irwin (in the 1967 NCAA Championships), and then by Steve Jones and John Lindberg. This makes McGlasson the first player to solely own both of these records since Hale Irwin held both from 1967-1980.
McGlasson played 14 holes of the round on Monday (January 31), and stood at 6-under par when play was suspended due to darkness. Of the four holes he had remaining (8 through 11), three were generally considered the toughest on the course. McGlasson opened with two pars, and then birdied the two toughest, 10 and 11, both playing to about a stroke over par on average for the meet. He also now owns the second and third best stroke improvements between rounds in CU history, as the 16 for this meet ranks third; he shot a second round 70 after opening with an 87 for a 17-stroke jump at the 2002 Prestige At PGA West, while Nyuli owns the top mark, improving 18 strokes (second round 90 to a final round 72) at the 1990 Miami-Doral Invitational.
McGlasson, who tied the tournament record with his effort, had no idea he was in range to set a school record. "My mindset was the same as it was (Monday), just taking one shot at a time, getting it on the fairway and then on the right part of the green so I could score," he said. "I did that, just missed a birdie and then made one. Then on the par-5 (No.11), I hit a solid drive, and I was 260 from the pin and I decided I wanted to go for the 62. I hit a perfect 3-wood just over the pin. I was really excited, and I don't think I've been that nervous over a putt for a long time, and I had the shakes. I left it two feet short, so I'll hear about that for a while.
McGlasson and the rest of the Colorado men's golf team will be in action this Thursday (Feb. 10)-Saturday (Feb. 12) when they travel to Waikoloa, Hawaii for the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate.
Others nominated for this week's award were Richard Roby (men's basketball), Jasmina Ilic (women's basketball), Gleisy Torres Torres (women's tennis) and Brent Vaughn (men's track and field).
Men's Basketball: Richard Roby, Freshman, San Bernardino, Calif.
The true freshman recorded back-to-back 20-plus point efforts, helping CU achieve a 1-1 record during the week. Roby scored a career-high 29 points in a losing effort at Texas Tech, including a personal-best seven 3-pointers against the Red Raiders. Roby followed that game with game-high 22 points in win at Kansas State. His two-game total was an average of 25.5 points, 18-of-31 field goals (.581) and 10-of-20 from the 3-point arc (.500), in addition of becoming the 12th player in CU history to make seven 3-pointers in a game (at Texas Tech). Roby's season points average is 15.6 per game which ranks second among CU freshman only behind Chauncey Billups (17.9 ppg.) set in 1996-97.
Women's Basketball: Jasmina Ilic, Sophomore, Becej, Serbia
The sophomore dropped a team high 22 points in a 103-76 losing effort at No. 19 Iowa State. Colorado went an impressive15-28 from behind the arc, and Ilic was a big part of that performance going 6-for-12 from 3-point range. In 32 minutes of play (2nd highest on the team), Ilic grabbed 10 rebounds, had two assists and one steal. In a close 72-62 loss to Texas A&M, Ilic contributed eight points, four rebound and three steals in 16 minutes of play.
Women's Tennis: Gleisy Torres Torres, Freshman, Barquisimeto, Venezuela
The freshman won the biggest match of her young collegiate career rallying from a set down and winning in three sets helping the Colorado women's tennis team to a 4-3 upset victory over No. 68 Washington State. CU, ranked No. 73 nationally, improves to 3-1 and the win over the Lady Cougars was the first this season over a ranked opponent. Torres Torres lost the first set 6-4, only to hold on and rally over the next two, 6-3, 6-1. It was Torres Torres' third win in four attempts this spring and improved to an overall 9-3.

The sophomore competed in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:20.56 at the Air Force Classic on Saturday, Feb. 5 taking home first place. Brent's time not only allowed him to take the title of first, it allowed him an NCAA provisional time, and a new meet record. Brent's new meet record defeated his previous of 8:30.53 in 2004.
