Renee Metivier Named CU Athlete of Week

BOULDER -- Senior distance runner Renee Metivier earned CU Athlete of the Week honors after dominating her 3,000-meter race and securing first place with a 9:29.35 time at the Big 12 Indoor Championship meet, this past weekend (Feb. 25-26) in Lincoln, Neb.

The Highland Village (Marcus), Texas native reached a NCAA provisional qualifying mark, but has already qualified for the NCAA Championships with an automatic qualifying time. Metevier also qualified for the NCAA Championships with an automatic qualifying time of 15:59.38 in the 5,000-meter race, capturing another first place win.

Others nominated for this week's award were Kendra Strandemo (women's tennis), Richard Roby (men's basketball), Jackie McFarland (women's basketball), Brent Vaughn (indoor track and field), Rachel Roosevelt (women's skiing), Henrik Hoye (men's skiing), and Hannah Hoch (women's golf).

 

Women's Tennis: Kendra Strandemo, San Diego, Calif.

The senior won her lone singles match of the week, defeating Hana Krafttova of Missouri in straight sets. In addition, Strandemo teamed with teammate Jessica Vanderdys for their initial victory at the No. 1 doubles slot this spring, upholding their No. 49 national ranking. Strandemo's singles victory was not only her fifth straight, but she has won eight out of her last nine outings this dual match season. Strandemo has now won 67 career singles matches becoming the 15th women in school history to accomplish that feat.

 

Men's Basketball: Richard Roby, Freshman, San Bernardino, Calif.

The true freshman dropped a career-high 30 points and tied a personal best seven 3-pointers in a losing effort against Kansas State. Roby, scored the most points by a CU freshman in nine years and also became only the fourth CU player to net seven or more 3-pointers in a game, twice. During CU's 0-2 week, Roby averaged 19.5 points with eight 3-pointers. His 30-point effort helped Roby pull into second place in school history among CU freshmen in points scored (422), trailing only Chauncey Billups (465).

 

Women's Basketball: Jackie McFarland, Derby, Kan.
The true freshman led the Buffs' with 13 points in an 83-40 losing effort to No. 13 Texas,. She added five rebounds, one block, and one assist. In their 11th straight loss, this time to the No. 6 Baylor Bears, McFarland posted her team leading fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Mcfarland is one of only nine players in the Big 12 to have five or more double-doubles this season, and has averaged 10.4 points and 6.4 rebounds, leading the Buffs' in both categories.

 

Indoor Track and Field: Brent Vaughn, Sophomore, Aurora, Colo.

The sophomore captured first place in the 5,000-meter race at the Big 12 Indoor Championships, automatically qualifying him for the NCAA Championships with a time of 13:59.55. He also controlled his 3,000-meter race with a season-best time of 8:05.90, also placing first in the race. His time set a personal record and was only seconds away from a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships.

 

Women's Skiing: Rachel Roosevelt, Freshman, Storrs, Conn.
The freshman won the slalom for her first collegiate victory at the New Mexico Invitational. In the NCAA West Regional, she did not finish her first run in the giant slalom, but came back to place fourth in the slalom, helping Colorado to a third place finish overall.

 

Men's Skiing: Henrik Hoye, Junior, Oslo, Norway
The junior finished second in the 10-kilometer classical race and seventh in the 20k freestyle event at the NCAA West Regional to help CU finish third overall as a team. He was among a group in the lead pack in the freestyle (skate) event, as just 20 seconds separated the top eight finishers after 12-plus miles of skiing.


Women's Golf: Hannah Hoch, Sophomore, Turlock, Calif.

The sophomore took medalist honors for the second time this season with a 3-over par 222, just the third time in program history for a Colorado player, when she won the Miccosukee Championship on the Miccosukee Country Club par-73 loop in Miami, the Buffs' first tournament of the spring season. She led the 98-player field after the first two rounds of play, with a four-stroke comfort zone over four players tied for second. She maintained her lead after the third and final round, winning by two strokes over Washington State's Anastasia Kostina, who carded a 5-over 224.
