CU Season, Barry Era Ends on Last Second Shot

March 08, 2005 | Women's Basketball

KANSAS CITY, Mo (AP) -- Lyndsey Medders made a game-winning 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds remaining Tuesday, lifting No. 18 Iowa State to a 64-62 victory over Colorado in the first round of the Big 12 tournament.

Though Iowa State was the ranked team and CU entered the game with just a 2-14 record in league play, it was Ceal Barry's Buffaloes who led virtually from start to finish.  Iowa State's only lead in the second half came at the gun -- or .2 seconds ahead of it.

It was Barry's last game after 22 seasons as head coach at Colorado; she will move into the assistant athletic director for student services position later this month.

Freshman guard Yari Escalera led Colorado with a career-high 19 points. Anna Nedovic had her fourth double double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Katie Robinette added 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Cyclones (22-5, 12-4), who trailed 50-42 with 6:45 remaining.

The Cyclones will face No. 14 Texas Tech in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Iowa State went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 50-49 with 4:11 remaining, but Nedovic's 3-pointer gave Colorado (9-19, 2-14) a four-point lead.

After the teams traded baskets, Mary Fox hit a 3 to bring Iowa State to 55-54. The Cyclones forced the Buffaloes into a shot clock violation on the next possession but Veronica Johns-Richardson stole the ball from Fox, giving the ball back to Colorado.

Escalera and Johns-Richardson each made two free throws to push Colorado's lead to 61-54 with 54 seconds left.

Anne O'Neil made two free throws for the Cyclones with 16.4 seconds remaining, cutting the deficit to 62-61.

Colorado created a wide open layup for Nedovic but she missed it, and Robinette got the rebound with six-seconds left. She moved the ball up the floor to O'Neil, who passed it over to Medders for the winning shot.
