No. 62 Women's Tennis Defeats KU, 5-2

LAWRENCE, Kan. ? The University of Colorado women's tennis team returned to the winners' circle Saturday afternoon defeating Kansas, 5-2, in a Big 12 Conference match. The win breaks a five-match losing streak for the Buffaloes who improve to 8-10 overall and 3-5 in the conference, while the Jayhawks drop to 4-15 and 3-7 in the Big 12.

            The win over KU is CU's fourth in a row since 2003 and the Buffs first victory since March 12 when they shutout Iowa State.

            CU jumped ahead with a 1-0 advantage after sweeping all three doubles positions led by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) No. 35th ranked team in Kendra Strandemo and Jessica Vanderdys. Strandemo/Vanderdys broke a two-match losing skid winning 8-6 at the No. 1 slot. Lynzee Kever and Martina Sedivec won at No. 2 taking an 8-2 winner, and at No. 3, Jenny Hanson and Gleisy Torres Torres teamed up for an 8-4 win.

            CU capitalized in the singles portion taking victories at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 for the final 5-2 tally.

            In singles, Sedivec pushed CU ahead 2-0 on the scoreboard with a straight-set winner at No. 5 (6-4, 6-4) followed by Kever's three-set victory at No. 1 singles. Kever won her fifth match in six outings rallying from a set down and cruised 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.

            After KU narrowed its deficit taking the No. 2 slot, the Buffaloes took care of the match at No. 3 and No. 4. Vanderdys and Veera Nurmi each broke five-match losing skids for the their first victories since March 12. Vanderdys triumphed in straight sets (6-3, 7-5) followed by Nurmi's clincher at No. 4 (7-6(2), 3-6, 6-1. 

            Sedivec has won the most dual spring matches with 11, while Nurmi holds the lead for the year with 15.

            CU travels to Manhattan to take on Kansas State for Sunday morning match beginning at 10 a.m.
