May 17, 2005 | General, Men's Golf, Track and Field

BOULDER-- Senior distance runner Sara Slattery earned University of Colorado Athlete of the Week honors Tuesday after she won both the 5, and 10,000-m runs at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Manhattan, Kan. over the weekend.

Running the 10k for the first time in her career on Friday night, Slattery took the Big 12 crown, set the meet and track records and qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 33 minutes, 43.10 seconds. A little more than half way into the race she had built a lead that would not be relinquished as she finished more than 30 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

Two days later in the 5k the Phoenix, Ariz. native again lead for the entire race bettering her own meet record and setting her second track record of the weekend by finishing the race in 15 minutes, 58.58 seconds. Slattery's victory was her t
hird outdoor 5k title, fifth outdoor crown and ninth league championship on the track since she began her illustrious career here in Boulder in 2000.

This is the second athlete of the week award for Slattery this school year. She also won on April 26 after winning the 5k at the Oregon Invitational.

Others nominated for this week's award were Jim Grady (men's golf) and Bret Schoolmeester (men's track and field).

Men's Golf: Jim Grady, RS-Freshman, Broomfield, Colo.

The redshirt freshman led the Buffaloes as he finished tied for 31st overall at The Perry Maxwell Intercollegite in Ardmore, Okla. Grady shot a career-best 71-74-75:220 and for his efforts he became the first freshman to lead the Buffs in scoring since April of 2003. His first round 71 was also a career low, besting his previous record set in the second round of the New Mexico Tucker Invitational by one stroke.

Men's Track and Field: Bret Schoolmeester, Junior, Sedalia, Colo.

The junior scored 14 points for the Buffaloes over the weekend at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Manhattan, Kan. with a second place finish in the 10k finishing in 29:25.44 and a third place finish in the 5k with a time of 14:14.89. Schoolmeester, who has already qualified for the NCAA championships in the 10k, led for most of the race but after five lead changes on the bell lap he came up just 1.77 seconds short of the title.
