McGlasson Fires Final Round 73 At NCAA Regional

May 21, 2005 | Men's Golf

NOTRE DAME, Ind. ? University of Colorado Edward McGlasson polished off his junior season here Saturday the way his week started in the 17th Annual NCAA Central Regional.

The lanky Orange, Calif., product fired a 3-over par 73 on the University of Notre Dame's Warren Golf Course, a 7,011-yard, par-70 configuration just north of the main campus.  That gave him a final total of 223, or 13-over par for the tournament, as he opened with a 73 Thursday and registered a 77 on Friday.

That tied him for 72nd individually; only the top two individuals not on the 10 teams qualifying for next month's NCAA Finals also advanced.  Those doing so here placed fourth and fifth, with 2- and 1-under total scores, respectively.

McGlasson, the lone Buff representative here as the team missed out on qualifying as a unit, finished the year with a 73.32 stroke average, tops for Colorado and the eighth best single-season figure in school history.

Starting on the back nine, he began his day with four pars and a birdie, including a par on the treacherous 495-yard, par-4 No. 10 which he had bogeyed and doubled in his previous two rounds.  Sitting pretty at 1-under after five and playing his best golf of the week, he bogeyed No. 15 with a three-putt and the scored a double on the next hole, as his drive went into a left-side sand trap and he had one of the toughest shots in a golf, a 60-yard uphill try to the green from the bunker.  It came out hot, hit the lip and sailed past the sloping green.  His chip shot back ran off the front side and into another bunker, where he was finally able to get the ball on the green.  A two-putt left him with a six and at 2-over for the day.

He then scored pars on Nos. 17 and 18 and then on No. 1, bogeyed No. 2 and ended his round with seven straight pars, including three holes where birdie putts singed the cup but wouldn't fall for him.  He hit 11 greens in regulation, the most he had all week, along with eight fairways in putting 31 times en route to the 73.

“The college year has come to a close, and there are a lot of positive to take from my experiences at NCAA's this week and from the season,” McGlasson said.  “Now is a time to reflect and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of my game.  This week I didn't really get anything going, didn't get much momentum building.  And when I did, I somehow found a way to destroy it pretty quickly.  I'm very disappointed in my performance my last three events, but now it's time to figure out what went wrong, remember what went right and come back strong next season.”

In the team competition, No. 6 Augusta State shot the low round of the tournament, a 1-over 281, to overhaul top-ranked Oklahoma State for the regional title.  Augusta closed with an 849 team score, defeating the Cowboys by nine shots after trailing OSU by three shots going in.

Augusta's Kalle Edberg claimed medalist honors, as he fired a 3-under 67 Saturday for a 5-under 205 total for 54 holes; only six players bettered par and a seventh matched it out 141 players in the field.

McGlasson, and several other Buffaloes, will now turn their attention to Monday's local qualifying for the U.S. Open.
