CU Soccer Blanks Colorado College 1-0
August 21, 2005 | Soccer
BOULDER -Â Freshman Nikki Keller recorded her first career goal for the University of Colorado soccer team as the Buffs held off Colorado College for a 1-0 exhibition win to start the 2005 season at Prentup field on Sunday.
Â
"We were a little nervous and tentative at the beginning, but we loosened up a little," said head coach Bill Hempen on the team's first game. "I wish we could have finished more of our chances (on goal)."
Â
The Buffs dominated both halves with a total of 26 shots, 13 of which were on goal, just unable to fall in.
Â
Colorado Freshman Nikki Keller started her first career game for the Buffaloes and proved to be a key player in the win. Keller exploded through the Tiger defense to receive a perfect pass from midfielder Ashlie Mihalcin and sent the ball past Tiger goalie Geneva Sills in the 19th minute.
Â
"It's great for her to finish that chance," said Hempen. "We knew Nikki would be a contributor coming in."
Â
Colorado had an opportunity to score in the 60th minute when Mihalcin ripped a shot through the Tiger defense, but Sills was there to make the save.
Â
Keller's goal proved to be the game-winner as both teams were held scoreless in the second half.
Â
With an exhibition win under their belt, Colorado will be back in action on Friday, August 26 to take on Vanderbilt in a 4 p.m. start at Prentup Field. Parking and admission are free.
