Soccer Falls 3-0 to North Carolina
August 28, 2005 | Soccer
TOPEKA, Kan. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team hoped the third time would be a charm against the North Carolina Tar Heels, as the programs met for the third time in CU's 10-year history on Sunday afternoon. Turns out the luck didn't fall the Buffs' way, as CU fell to North Carolina by a score of 3-0.
Â
The 22nd-ranked Buffaloes (1-1) got 10 shots off in the game, including three on goal. Junior Katie Griffin led the Buffaloes with three shots. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Keller posted six saves on the day.
Â
UNC got on the board in the 10th minute of play with what was eventually the game's deciding goal. Gilbert beat two defenders and then slotted a shot past CU goalkeeper Jessica Keller to make it 1-0 at 9:17.
Â
"This game proves that to beat one of the best, you have to capitalize on the opportunities you get," said head coach Bill Hempen. "We didn't and they did. Having said that, we didn't make mistake after mistake, but when we did make mistakes at crucial times they were able to capitalize on it."
Â
"We probably let down a little bit (after the first goal), and we had to regroup," said Hempen. "We had the ball for enough of the time that we probably took the first shot of the game, but we were unsuccessful. We lacked sophistication up front, but if you don't execute the little things you come out on the short end of the result."
Â
In the 30th minute of play, North Carolina made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal by Elizabeth Guess. Guess banged home a rebound from about five yards out for her second goal of the season at 29:29.  It was Chalupny who wracked up the game's third and final goal at 48:13 of the match. Chalupny ripped a shot from 20 yards out past Keller with Kacey White assisting Chalupny on the goal.
Â
"We just played the number one team in the nation," Hempen said. "I don't want them to be overly happy with this performance knowing that we have a different set of challenges ahead of us. The local rivalry is next, and if you are overly content with a loss, all the effort today sometimes doesn't reflect well on this Friday. So it's on to the next game."Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Â
Speaking of that next game, Colorado will be on the road again next weekend, though not far away as they will travel to the University of Denver for the Denver Soccer Classic. Colorado plays this Friday, September 2 at 4 p.m. against the home team Denver, and then will play either Wyoming or Northeastern on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m.
