Soccer Falls to USC 2-0

September 10, 2005 | Soccer

LOS ANGELES - The University of Colorado women's soccer team suffered it's second loss of the season here Friday night, falling to the University of Southern California by a score of 2-0.  CU is winless it its last four contests, falling to North Carolina on August 28 and then tying back-to-back matches at the DU Soccer Classic last weekend. The Buffs won their season opener 2-1 over Vanderbilt.

USC (3-1) got on the board near the end of the first half, notching a goal at the 43:42 mark.  Women of Troy substitute Jocelyn Hein hit in a cross from the left side on an assist from Amy Rodriguez.  All told, the teams were relatively even statistically at the half with CU posting four shots to USC's six. Both goalkeepers pulled in three saves in the first half of the game, with CU's Jessica Keller allowing one goal in.

Colorado (1-2-2) almost equalized at the 47:23 mark when senior Kathryn Grandinetti hit the post with a shot, but CU was not able to finish that chance. The Buffs followed that up with three-consecutive corner kicks which they were unable to convert.  The lack of scoring chances off those corners would haunt CU a few minutes later when the Women of Troy got a safety goal.  Defender Megan Holmes notched  USC's second goal at the 62:23 mark of the second half.  She got forward on a corner kick by Rosa Anna Tantillo, which she headed home for a 2-0 lead.

Both teams finished the game with 10 shots, with CU's Keller posting five saves to USC's Veronica Simonton's four.  CU junior Katie Griffin finished with three shots on goal to lead Colorado, but unfortunately she could not hammer any home.

USC is now 2-0 against CU, as the teams met in 2000 in Tempe, Ariz., a 1-0 Women of Troy victory.  Colorado will take on No. 3 UCLA on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. MDT.  UCLA fell in double overtime to No. 4 Penn State earlier this evening by a score of 1-0.  It will be the first meeting between the two programs, and CU's second tilt with a top five team after meeting UNC earlier this season.
