Soccer Blasts Detroit 3-0

September 16, 2005 | Soccer

BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team bounced back from a five game winless streak in impressive fashion here Friday afternoon, beating the University of Detroit by a score of 3-0 in the fourth annual Colorado Soccer Classic.

"We were much, much better today on defense," said CU head coach Bill Hempen.  "We finally got some film from our games on the road, and we had the kids in for film. It is so much easier to show them what they are doing on film than to tell them, and I think they were embarrassed by some of the breakdowns we had.  They were just great today."

Colorado (2-3-2) got on the board early with a goal from junior forward Katie Griffin.  Griffin took a ball at midfield and dribbled it all the way to the penalty box, where she cut inside her defender and blasted a shot from the left side of the box into the right upper-90 of the goal at the 8:23 mark of the first half.  It was Griffin's second goal of the season.

Junior Allie True saw her first action of the 2005 season after rehabbing a torn ACL in the 29th minute.  She made an immediate impact upon entering the game, playing a ball down the left wing to junior Samantha Picraux.  Picraux dumped a cross in the penalty box to senior Fran Munnelly, who finished it easily into the right side of the net for her second goal of the season. It marked the first collegiate point for the walk on Picraux, and an assist for True on her first touch of the season.

"Once I stepped on the field and took my first touch, it all came right back to me," said True.  "It was like I hadn't been gone long at all."

Munnelly would strike again with just four minutes left in the match on an unassisted strike.  She took the ball in the Detroit half, dribbled well into the box and across from right to left.  Detroit goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry got a hand on it, but Munnelly pulled it back and buried in the net for her third goal of the season.  That score puts Munnelly at 25 career goals, just one goal shy of tying Melissa Cartmell for the career mark (26).

Senior goalkeeper Jessica Keller earned her first shutout of the season, aided by a defense that allowed zero shots on goal and just two shots in the game.  Colorado posted 30 shots, 14 of which were on goal.  Munnelly led the way with five shots on goal.

In the day's earlier game, the University of Denver toppled the University of Pittsburgh 2-0.  DU got goals from junior forward and Boulder native Lleane Grimditch.  The Fairview High School product notched her first goal at the 54:23 mark with a blast into the upper 90 of the net on an assist from Jenna Billingsley.  She earned No. 2 at the 83:03 mark with a shot from the left into the top right of the net.

The Buffaloes will be back in action on Sunday when they take on the University of Pittsburgh at 12 p.m. That will be preceded by Denver facing Detroit at 10 a.m.
