Roby and Zikova Named CU Athletes of the Week
January 19, 2006 | General, Men's Basketball, Skiing
Sophomore men's basketball standout Richard Roby and sophomore women's skier Lucie Zikova were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the weeks of December 11-January 14. This marks Zikova's first CU Athlete of the Week honor and Roby's fourth consecutive.
Roby, a San Bernardino, Calif. (Lawrence Academy) native, scored a career-high 33 points leading CU from a come-from-behind victory at Missouri, helping Colorado record their first Big 12 Conference win of the season. Roby scored 21 of his career-best in a second half that included a season high six 3-pointers. The win was only CU's second win in Columbia in Big 12 play since the 1996-97 season. Roby averaged 24.0 points during the week that saw the Buffs fall at home to Kansas, 75-63 before their win over Missouri later in the week. Over his two games, Roby also totaled eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in the two contests. The 6-6 guard also won the Big 12 conference player of the week honor, becoming the first Colorado standout to win Big 12 Player of the Week accolades since David Harrison in 2003-04. Through four Big 12 conference games Roby is averaging 20.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 block, and 1.25 steals a game. Roby and the rest of the men's basketball team will be in action again this Saturday when they travel to Stillwater, Okla. to take on Oklahoma State.
Zikova, a Prague, Czech Republic (Gymnazium Ustavni 400) native, completed one of the most successful weeks in CU skiing history, as she won both the giant slalom (Saturday) and slalom at the Montana State Invitational (Saturday-Sunday) after winning the slalom and finishing second in the GS four days earlier at the Alaska Invitational. That gave her three collegiate wins and a runner-up finish to go with three wins in FIS competition the previous weekend, or six victories and a second place in just a 10-day span.
Others nominated for this week's award were: Kit Richmond (men's skiing).
Men's Skiing: Kit Richmond, Sophomore, Red Deer, Alberta
Richmond, at the Montana State Meet, finished second in the classic and sixth in the freestyle. In the previous week he finished fourth in the classical and sixth in the freestyle at the Alaska Invitational.
