Washington and Marshall Named CU Athletes of the Week

BOULDER-- Senior linebacker (football) Thaddaeus Washington and freshman forward (soccer) Nikki Marshall were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of October 16-22. This is Washington's first and Marshall's second CU athlete of the week honors of the year, while they both have two such honors for their careers.

Washington, a Marrero, La., (John Ehret) native, played every snap on defense (75) in registering a career-high 19 tackles (12 solo), with four third/fourth down stops, a pass broken up and a QB chasedown (near sack) against Oklahoma. In the process, he became the 13th player in school history to record 300 in a career (he stands 11th all-time), and while doing so, he passed his position coach, Brian Cabral, who posted 297 between 1974-77. Cabral, who is still tied for 14th place all-time, has now coached seven players ahead of him on CU's all-time charts: Matt Russell, 446; Greg Biekert, 441; Ted Johnson, 409; Chad Brown, 369; Michael Jones, 349; Jason Sykes, 330, and Washington 309.

Marshall, a Mead, Colo., (Skyline) native, set three school records in two games this weekend, giving her eight different records this season for Colorado. With her goal on Friday in CU's 3-0 win over Texas Tech, Marshall passed current senior Katie Griffin for the CU freshman scoring record with 11 goals. She also set the freshman points mark with 24 points on the season. Then her game-winning goal against Baylor gave her CU's overall point record with 26 points on the season, and she ties the overall single season goals record of 12 held by Katie Griffin.

Marshall has scored goals in three straight games and is the leading goal scorer in the Big 12 Conference. Her three new records add to her previous five set this season: most goals in a game (4), most points in a game (8), most consecutive games with a goal (4), and most goals in a three game span (6), and most consecutive games with a point (6). She averaged six shots and 4.5 shots on goal on the weekend in 165 minutes of play.

Men's Golf: Michael Baird, Junior, Castle Rock, Colo.

Baird tied for 20th in The Prestige At PGA West, recording a 73-72-72--217 scorecard on the 7,156-yard, par-72 Greg Norman Course at PGA West. Colorado tied for ninth overall as a team in the 15-team field.

Tennis: Monica Milewski, Sophomore, Park City, Ill.

Milewski won three straight matches, all in straight sets, only to fall in the quarterfinal round at the Wilson/ITA Central Regional hosted by the University of Utah. She won the opening set in her quarters match 7-5 against BYU's Anastasia Surkova, however, subsequently dropped the next two sets, 6-0, 6-4. Milewski, nationally ranked No. 86 by the ITA was the only the CU player to advance to Saturday's quarters and improved her singles fall match record to 9-3. In doubles, she teamed with Franziska Jendrian to advance to the Round of 16.

Volleyball: Amber Sutherland, Junior, Glenwood Springs, Colo.

Sutherland recorded 46 kills, 23 digs, six blocks, a pair of assists and aces; while hitting .270 as CU defeated Baylor and Texas Tech last week. She averaged 5.75 kpg, 2.88 dpg, 0.75 bpg and 6.44 ppg in the victories. Sutherland led CU in kills in both matches, hammering 22 and 24. She added 12 digs the first night and 11 the second for a pair of double-doubles, her eighth and ninth of the season. Sutherland's 24 kills was the fourth-highest amount of her career (35, 26, 25).
