Vaughn and Barringer Run to CU Athletes of the Week
October 31, 2006 | Cross Country, General
BOULDER-Cross Country standouts, junior Brent Vaughn and sophomore Jenny Barringer were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of October 23-28. This is Vaughn's first and Barringer's third CU athlete of the week honors of the year, while they have two and four, respectively, for their careers.
Vaughn, an Aurora, Colo., (Smokey Hill) native, led CU to its 11th straight Big 12 Cross Country title on Friday, Oct. 27 in Lawrence, Kansas. Vaughn finished third overall and was the first Buff across the finish line. He ran with the lead pack the whole race (8k), finishing in 24:39.40, behind Colby Wissel (KU) and Joe Thorne (Texas). Vaughn earned his third All-Big 12 Honor and helped CU to a score of 36. CU defeated runner-up Texas by 44 points.
Barringer, an Oviedo, Fla., (Oviedo) native, Barringer helped the women's team to its eighth consecutive Big 12 title and 10th of 11 possible titles. Barringer was the Big 12 runner-up for the second straight season; crossing the finish in 20:45.52, behind Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech. Barringer also ran in the led pack the entire race (6k) in leading the Buffs and notched her second All-Big 12 honor in two years.
Others nominated for this week's Michael Baird (men's golf), Ryan Walters (football), Amber Sutherland (volleyball) and Nikki Marshall (soccer).
Men's Golf: Michael Baird, Junior, Castle Rock, Colo.
Baird, who transferred to CU from Pepperdine last June, had a successful return to his original college locale, as he tied for 13th individually with a 228 score in Pepperdine's Club Glove Intercollegiate. He carded a final round 77 on the 6,985-yard, par-72 Saticoy Country Club course, a challenging and tight layout. There wasn't a single round in the 60s recorded by any of the 62 players in the field (186 rounds), with just one 2-under par 70 and five 1-under 71s, one of which was logged by Baird in Monday's second round.
Football: Ryan Walters, Sophomore, Aurora, Colo.
Walters recorded 8 tackles (6 solo), 2 third down stops, one pass deflection and a 95-yard fumble return for a touchdown. The fumble return is the second-longest fumble return in Colorado history and tied for the 23rd longest play of any kind.
Volleyball: Amber Sutherland, Junior, Glenwood Springs, Colo.
Sutherland led CU to a 1-1 record on the weekend. She averaged 4.50 kills, 2.62 digs and 0.25 blocks per game while hitting .188. Sutherland recorded 20 kills in a five-game win at Texas A&M and 16 in a three-game loss to No. 8 Texas. The win against A&M marks the first time CU has ever swept the season series with the Aggies.
Soccer: Nikki Marshall, Freshman, Mead, Colo.
Marshall scored two goals in Colorado's lone game of the weekend, a 4-0 win over Kansas, CU's first win in Lawrence since 2000 and the first for coach Bill Hempen. It was also CU's biggest margin of victory ever over the Jayhawks. Marshall took over sole possession of the Colorado record for single season goals, now currently 14. She also tied her own record for consecutive games with a goal, now with four, and posted her second highest single game point total with five. She also has five game-winning goals, tying the single season record, her ninth school record this year: most goals in a game (4), most points in a game (8), most consecutive games with a goal (4-twice), and most goals in a three game span (6), most consecutive games with a point (6), goals in a season (14), and points in a season (31).
