Denver Advances to Second Round With 2-0 Win Over Kentucky
November 10, 2006 | Soccer
BOULDER - The first round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament was kicked off with the University of Denver beating the University of Kentucky, 2-0, at Prentup Field on Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers out-shot the Wildcats nine to three in the first half and Denver's goalkeeper Dani Wiley picked up two saves on Kentucky's two shots on goal.
Denver would get on the board in the third minute of the second half with a Jenna Billingsly goal. DU's Dana Schonberger sent a through ball to the middle of the goal. As Kentucky's keeper, Anne Ogundele went for the ball, it would slip past her diving reach and Billingsly was on the receiving end to one-time it into the goal.
The Pioneers would strike again less than six minutes later as Lleane Grimditch carried a ball into the box on the left hand side of the goal. Once again, as Kentucky's Ogundele came out to challenge it, Grimditch would take one touch past her and place the ball in the back of the net, giving Denver the 2-0 lead in the 51st minute of the game.
"We did a good job after the first 10-15 minutes by creating our own chances," said Denver head coach Jeff Hooker. "At half time that's what we talked about, creating our own chances, like Jenna (Billingsley) did on her goal."
After a fairly quiet first half, the Pioneers stepped up the intensity with two quick second half goals, pacing them to a 2-0 win over Kentucky. Denver will advance to the second round to play the winner of the other first round match between Colorado and Colorado College. The second round game will kick off at noon on Sunday at Prentup Field.
