December 12, 2006 | General, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
BOULDER-- Standout junior basketball players Richard Roby (men's basketball) and Jackie McFarland (women's basketball) were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of December 3-December 9. This is the first recognition for both athletes this year, but neither are strangers to the award as this marks Roby's seventh and McFarland's fourth career recognitions. This also marks the third time the two have won the award in the same week.
Roby, a San Bernardino, Calif. (Lawrence Academy) native, averaged 24.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and three assists in three games helping the Colorado men's basketball team to a 1-2 record during the week. The Buffaloes edged Northern Colorado, 88-86, lost to Pepperdine 78-72 and Colorado State 72-69. While they finished the week 1-2, they lost by an average of only 4.6 points.
Against the Bears, Roby recorded his fifth career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds; against the Waves, he collected a season-best 32 points; and against the Rams, he scored a game-high 20 points with four assists and three blocked shots. It was Roby's third, fourth and fifth game this season scoring over 20 points.
McFarland, a Derby, Kan. (Derby) native, averaged 17.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in two road games last week. Against Cal State Fullerton, she recorded 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting and seven rebounds in the 89-77 loss. McFarland also recorded her seventh double-double of the season two days later as she recorded 14 points and 15 rebounds, eight of which were offensive in the Buffs' 70-60 loss to the Ducks.
