February 04, 2006 | Tennis

PULLMAN, Wash. ? The University of Colorado women's tennis team won for the fourth time out of five matches this spring season defeating the Washington State Cougars, 4-3, Saturday afternoon. The victory by the Buffaloes was their second straight and first one on the road this year.

The win over Washington State is CU's second in as many years over the unranked Cougars having won against today's opponent last year in Boulder.

CU, ranked No. 41 nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association team rankings performed a team-first not seen since their season opening win over Air Force, won the doubles points and took the early 1-0 lead. The Buffs scored victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles slots for the quick 1-0 advantage.  Senior Jessica Vanderdys and Gleisy Torres Torres teamed up for the first time this spring taking an 8-4 winner at No. 2; and at No. 3, sophomore Veera Nurmi and freshman Franziska Jendrian remained unbeaten in five matches this season for an 8-2 winner.

In singles, CU only needed to claim three points for the team win and did so with Vanderdys at No. 2, Ewa Losinski at No. 3, and Nurmi at No. No. 4.

Vanderdys won her 64th career singles match and 13th of the season taking a 6-4, 6-1 winner; Losinski, who subsequently clinched the match for CU, remained unbeaten in singles play winning a tough three-set match and upsetting No. 81 Marjolein van de Ven, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(6). Losinski is 5-0 this spring.

Nurmi, ranked No. 84 nationally won her 12th match of the year and third of the spring won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4.

CU travels to Spokane, Wash. on Sunday, Feb. 5 to take on Gonzaga in their first-ever match up with the Zags.
