Golfers 12th, McGlasson Now Third In Hawaii

The No. 41 Buffaloes are toward the tail end of a 12-team logjam, as with a 578 team score, are just six strokes out of fourth place. Just 10 strokes separate fourth and 15th places in the 21-team meet, which currently has No. 2 Georgia Tech atop the leaderboard with a 547 score. The Yellow Jackets are running away from the rest of the field, as their 21-under effort through 36 holes is good for a 14 shot lead over No.3 Oklahoma State (561, -7), with No. 8 Southern California the only other team under par at 565 (-3)
CU senior Edward McGlasson was one of the lucky few to score par or better in wind gusts that ranged from 25 to 40 miles per hour, as he recorded an even-par 71 to move into a third place tie individually heading into Friday's final round. He owns a 66-71?137 scorecard, 5-under par, which has him five strokes out of the lead.
Just 14 players in the 105-man field shot par or better on the 6,777-yard, par-71 Waikoloa Village Golf Course layout, with just seven posting scores in red numbers. Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale leads after two rounds, as he owns a 10-under 132 score after a tournament best 67 Thursday; first round leader, Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin, slipped into second after a second round 70 has him in with an 8-under 134 total.
McGlasson is chasing history, as if he can win here, he would join two very famous former Buffaloes as the only players to win back-to-back tournaments, Hale Irwin and Steve Jones. McGlasson ended the fall with his first collegiate win in the Tunica (Miss.) National Intercollegiate; Irwin won the Big Eight and NCAA titles to conclude his career in 1967, and Jones won back-to-back in 1981 at Brigham Young and Arizona State.
Junior Ryan Anderson recorded his best collegiate round in competition by firing a 1-over par 72, two strokes better than his previous college best, for a 146 total that has him tied for 43rd overall. Redshirt freshman Derek Tolan had a 76 for a 147 total, with sophomore Patrick Grady also scoring a 76 for 150 score and freshman Diego Munoz struggling to a 79 to close at 151.
"The conditions were very tough all day long, but the guys kept grinding and hung in there really well," interim head coach Brad Neher said. "Everybody did a good job of finishing. Ed's game is just in such great shape, he has been consistent throughout, and Ryan had a couple of birdies down the stretch to post a solid score. Derek and Patrick hung in there, and Diego had a freshman-type day. He'll be okay.
"I am happy with our patience," Neher added. "A few teams blew up, but we maintained as best as we could. This was a good experience for us. We're not playing bad, but if we can get it under par quickly tomorrow, I think we can get on a roll and post a really good score. We're still not putting that well, we're not used to this kind of grass, so hopefully we can break through in the final round. It's a learning process (getting used to the greens and the grain), and I think they're ready to put it all together tomorrow."
This is CU's first competition since its long-time head coach, Mark Simpson, lost a yearlong battle to lung cancer last December 5. The team has dedicated the remainder of the season to him, with individual team members also making their own personal dedications to Colorado's coach of 29 years.
Friday's final round tee times begin at 11 a.m. mountain time.
