Vaughn and Rehemaa Earn Athlete of the Week Honors

March 01, 2006 | General, Track and Field, Skiing

BOULDER - Junior men's track and field stand out Brent Vaughn and senior skier Jana Rehemaa were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of February 21-27. This is both Vaughn and Rehemaa's first CU Athlete of the Week honor of the year.

Vaughn, an Aurora, Colo. (Smoky Hill) native, won the 3k for the second straight year at the Big 12 Championships, and took second in the 5k to earn 18 points for CU at the meet. He set a personal best 8:04.03, a provisionally qualifying mark in the 3k. In the 5k, he completed the race in 13:56.81 and was runner-up to teammate Billy Nelson.

Rehemaa, a Tartu, Estonia (Tartu Suusaklub) native, won her fourth consecutive event, the women's 15-kilometer freestyle race at the RMISA/NCAA West Regional Championships. Colorado, ranked second in the nation, claimed its first NCAA west title since 2002, as the Buffaloes amassed 577 points to defeat runner-up New Mexico by nearly 30 points.  In winning by almost a minute over Denver's Anna-Karin Maeki in a 42:47.9 time, she became just the third CU skier to sweep the RMISA/regional cross country titles and only the second woman, joining Mari Storeng, who also did so in 2002.  The only other Buff to accomplish a regional sweep was John Skajem, who won the slalom and the GS in 1986. In addition, Rehemaa won the women's 5K classical race for the third-straight outing, as she cruised to an 18-second win in a time of 16:46.54.

Others nominated for this week's award were: Glean Eddy (men's basketball), Henrik Hoye(Men's Skiing), Gleisy Torres Torres (Women's Tennis), Christine Bolf (Track and Field), and Whitney Law (women's basketball).

Men's Basketball: Glean Eddy, Senior, Nashville, Tenn.

Eddy scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench, rallying CU past Missouri, 78-60 last Saturday afternoon. He came into the game at 9:28 of the first half and shut down Mizzou's leading scorer Thomas Gardner, limiting him with only three points on 10 shots the rest of the game.

Men's Skiing: Henrik Hoye, Senior, Oslo, Norway

At the RMISA/NCAA West Regional Championships, Hoye won the men's 10K, earning him the first win of his career, skiing the course in 26:24.96.  That was good for a five-plus second win over Denver's John Stene, who was timed in 26:30.38. Colorado, ranked second in the nation, claimed its first NCAA west title since 2002, as the Buffaloes amassed 577 points to defeat runner-up New Mexico by nearly 30 points.

Women's Tennis: Gleisy Torres Torres, Sophomore, Barquisimeto, Venezuela

Torres Torres clinched Colorado's victory at No. 6 singles in straight sets (6-3, 6-1), helping the Buffaloes defeat No. 65 Texas Tech 5-2. CU, ranked No. 42 nationally, improved to 7-3 and 1-1 in the Big 12 Conference with the win over the Lady Red Raiders (5-4, 1-2).  She also teamed up for a doubles win at No. 2 with teammate with Ewa Losinski, and is 9-4 this season.

Track and Field: Christine Bolf, Senior, Los Angeles, Calif.

Bolf took the 5k crown and won the first conference track title of her career. She finished in 16:12.60; her win marked the second straight year a Buff has won the race and was the fourth time in five years CU has claimed the title. She also finished fourth in the 3k, with a time of 9:32.72, leading the pack by almost a full 10 seconds.

Women's Basketball: Whitney Law, Senior, Littleton, Co.

Law led all scorers with 27 points, leading the Buffs past Oklahoma State 73-62. In her last home game, she hit 8-of-11 from the field and 10-of-11 from the line as she hit the 20-point mark for the fourth time this season and surpassed her previous best of 22 at Colorado State on Nov. 30. Law also had a game-high six assists while adding five rebounds and two steals.
