Golfers Finish 10th In Louisiana Classics

March 07, 2006 | Men's Golf

LAFAYETTE, La. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team never got untracked here Wednesday and slipped one spot into a 10th place finish in the 21st Annual Louisiana Classics.

Houston won its second straight meet, rallying from four strokes down to top No. 11 Baylor by a single stroke.  The Cougars, who defeated CU last week in their own All-American Intercollegiate, posted a 1-under team score of 287 for an 846 total, while the Bears logged a 4-over 292 for an 847 final tally.  Memphis (858) and Missouri and SMU (both 860), rounded out the top five in the 15-team field that included seven top 50 teams.

The Buffs, ranked No. 46, came into the final round tied for ninth, but unlike the first two rounds, did not have a golfer record an under par round and settled for a 299 score for and finished with an 877 total, good for 10th place.

Senior Edward McGlasson and redshirt freshman Derek Tolan, both in contention for medalist honors when the day started, just couldn't get anything substantial going and thus never threatened for the individual title.  McGlasson recorded a 1-over par 73 and Tolan a 3-over 75 on the 7,002-yard, par-72 Oakbourne Country Club course, as both finished 54 holes with 2-under 214 scorecards and tied for 10th individually.

Small consolation was the fact that McGlasson and Tolan posted the best individual total by a CU golfer in the 16 years the Buffaloes have participated here, as both topped the previous best, an even-par 216, by Knut Ekjord in 1999 and Matt Zions in 2000.  That, and the Buffs improved on a last place finish here in 2005, finishing 13-over as a team as compared to 51-over (and for just 36 holes) in the rain-shortened event last March.

Baylor's Jeremy Alcorn claimed medalist honors with a final round 71 for a 9-under par 207 total, which was good for a two shot win over Houston's Ricky Romano.  Baylor has played in three spring tournaments with its golfers claiming medalist honors in all three.

“I'm still very happy with Derek and Ed.  They just didn't close out well, but both finished under par on a tough golf course,” interim head coach Brad Neher said.  “But we know what we have to do now, as we have a good barometer after three meets in the spring of where we are and just what we have do.

“We need to work on our short game, decision making and par-five play; everything else is pretty good,” Neher said.  “It's pretty simple.  We're going to go home, work hard at what we've learned and go out and play the meat of our schedule.  That's the great thing about golf.  You get factual feedback.  So we'll do just that and get after it at Stevinson Ranch.”

Senior Kenny Coakley shot a 5-over 77 to close with a 223 total, tying for 50th, while sophomore Patrick Grady matched Tolan with CU's second best score of the day (75) to finish at 12-over 228, good for a 62nd-place tie, with junior Ryan Anderson recording a final round 76 for a 229 score, tying for 65th.

The Buffaloes resume play in three weeks in their own meet, the CU-Stevinson Ranch Invitational, a battle of primarily Central Region rivals in central California.
