April 10, 2006 | General
BOULDER - The University of Colorado Cheerleading Team finished in sixth place at the National Cheerleading Association Collegiate Championships Last Friday, April 7, the team's highest ranking in school history. With a score of 8.76 on a 10-point scale, the Buffs also attained the highest score in team national finals history.
"This trip was an outstanding display of determination and dedication from the members of the team," Head Coach Travis Prior said.
After the preliminary round Thursday, CU was in 12th place due to some deductions for execution errors. Only the top eight automatically advance to the finals, so the Buffs had to compete in the Challenge Cup the next day to make the cut. The team finished with a score of 8.69, securing a first-place ranking in its division and a trip to the finals.
"Taking the stage at the band shell on the beach in Daytona is where we wanted to be," Prior said. "We stormed onto the performance floor and let loose with absolutely the best performance by a team in my six-year coaching history at CU. The level of execution and performance quality was the greatest we have seen out of our program."
The top five teams, in order, were Louisville, Middle Tennessee State, UNC-Charlotte, the University of Illinois-Chicago and Southern Methodist University.
