Bjork and Newlands Named CU Athletes of the Week
April 05, 2006 | General, Track and Field
BOULDER- Junior men's tennis player Peter Bjork and senior thrower Carly Newlands were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the weeks of March 21-April 3. This is Bjork's second (Jan. 24) and Newlands's first CU Athlete of the Week honor of the year.
Bjork, a Huddinge, Sweden (Akademi Bastad) native, won a pair of singles matches and teamed up for a doubles victory helping the Colorado men's team to a pair wins over Oklahoma and Nebraska, respectively. He won both of his singles matches at No. 2 in straight sets, improving his team-leading 12th dual match win for the Buffaloes. Bjork, who also leads the team in season victories with 22, won his 50th career singles match against the Cornhuskers. He is the lone CU player nationally ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) at No. 121. He rallied from a 4-0 deficit in his second set against Nebraska, claiming victory 6-1, 7-5. In doubles, Bjork teamed up with Marek Dvorak at No. 3 doubles in the road win at Oklahoma. Colorado is 3-0 in the Big 12 Conference, a school first since the 1992-93 season and is currently ranked No. 28 nationally by the ITA, this is the highest ranking ever by a men's tennis team at the University of Colorado.
Newlands, a Fort Collins, Colo. (Rocky Mountain) native, placed second in both of her events, shot put and discus. She recorded a throw of 44-11 in the shot put and a toss of 140-9 in the discuss. The later throw was her longest of the year, and the longest for any CU discuss thrower this year.
Others nominated for this week's George Pincock (men's track and field) and Ryan Anderson (men's golf).
Men's Track and Field: George Pincock, Junior, Carson City, Nev.
Pincock took first in the 200-meter dash at the Tom Benich Classic in Greeley, Colo. on April 1. He recorded a personal record of 20.92, just one-hundredth off of the stadium record of 20.91. Pincock was also the first leg in the 4x400 meter relay that broke the stadium record of 3:12.26, with the new mark of 3:10.46.
Men's Golf: Ryan Anderson, Junior, Greeley, Colo.
Anderson tied for sixth individually with a 76-72--148 (4-over par) scorecard to help lead Colorado to the team title in the rain-shortened CU-Stevinson Ranch Invitational. CU defeated Kansas State by one shot in the 36-hole event, with Anderson's second round 72 bettered by just two other players in the 77-man field as conditions turned brutal during the round. Thus, his par effort was crucial in CU winning its own meet for the first time in eight tries.
