Golfers Eighth Through Two Rounds At The Maxwell
May 13, 2006 | Men's Golf
ARDMORE, Okla. - The University of Colorado men's golf team, behind a pair of 4-under par efforts after 36 holes, stood in eighth place in the 15th Annual Perry Maxwell Intercollegiate through two rounds here Saturday.
No. 2 Oklahoma State owns a two round total of 524, or 36-under par, which is good for a four-stroke lead over No. 14 Baylor and a 14-shot edge on No. 24 Tulsa. Colorado is in eighth place, after rounds of 282 and 268 for a 10-under total of 560.
The Maxwell utilizes its own unique scoring system, recording the best four scores per hole instead of per round, which is the standard format. For example, if scored the usual way, OSU would still be leading with a 539 score, while the Buffaloes would have put a 292 and a 279 in the books for 571 total.
Regardless, CU's afternoon round tied for the best single score for 18 holes by the Buffaloes as a team this year, matching a 1-under 283 recorded in the first round of the Hawaii-Hilo Intercollegiate.
It would have been the best had a rules official, Mike Miller, not assessed Colorado a two-stroke team penalty in the second round for slow play after just three holes, even the Buffaloes were not the last team to finish the shotgun round, nor ever held up play for any team behind it. Tournament officials admitted that he (Miller) was probably a little overzealous, but were unable to reverse the decision though they understood CU's complaints against the ruling and basically sided with the Buffaloes. CU was the only team tagged with a penalty, as the first red card was issued for the team was for an alleged 40-second delay, with the second for a similar time.
Senior Edward McGlasson paced the Buffaloes with a 70-66--136 scorecard, which has him tied for third heading into Sunday's final round. He had three birdies and three bogeys in his opening round, and came back with four birdies the second time around the 6,442-yard, par-70 Dornick Hills Country Club track. A solid candidate for All-America honors, McGlasson came into this tournament as one of the nation's top 25 ranked goflers with a 72.47 stroke average.
He is tied with six others, including CU sophomore Patrick Grady, who posted his two best collegiate career scores back-to-back Saturday. He opened with a 65, the second best score of the round as well as all day, and followed it up with a 71, both besting his previous college best of 73 set earlier this year. Grady, however, is competing individually as his scores do not count toward CU's team total.
Senior Kenny Coakley played some of his best golf of the season, as he put up a 72-69--141 scorecard, tying him for 23rd. Though he had four previous subpar rounds, all were 71 scores, thus he posted his first score this year in the 60s.
Redshirt freshman Derek Tolan (75-72--147), junior Ryan Anderson (75-75--15) and sophomore Jim Grady (79-72--151) rounded out the CU scoring on the day.
There is a lot at stake for the Buffaloes individually Sunday. McGlasson is the only player who will definitely represent the team at the NCAA Central Region next week, which will take place May 18-20 just east of Cleveland. The other four spots will go to the top four finishers between the other five players competing here. In essence, the postseason has already begun for a trio of Buffaloes, as it appears the final NCAA berth will come down to Tolan, Anderson and/or Jim Grady heading into Sunday.
Assistant AD Charles Johnson, one of two administrators who have taken over coordinating the day-to-day needs of the program after interim coach Brad Neher stepped down in April, accompanied the team to Ardmore. Neher took over last winter following the death of long-time head coach Mark Simpson, who passed away December 5 due to complications from a yearlong battle with lung cancer.
The Buffs final round of the tournament is set for Sunday. Live Internet coverage of the tournament begins at 10 a.m. at www.kxii.com.
