McGlasson and Barringer Named CU Athletes of the Week
May 03, 2006 | General, Men's Golf, Tennis, Track and Field
BOULDER-- Senior standout men's golfer Edward McGlasson and freshman women's track and field runner Jenny Barringer were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of April 26-May 3. This is McGlasson's third (Nov. 8 and Feb. 22) and Barringer's first CU Athlete of the Week honor of the year. McGlasson's honor ended the men's tennis team's five-week stranglehold on the men's half of the award; the last male non-tennis player to win the award was Zach Hazen on March 8, as the entire Colorado Ski team earned the award on March 15 after winning their 16th NCAA National Championship and 17th National Championship overall.
McGlasson, an Orange, Calif. (Elmodena) native, tied for fourth at the Big 12 Championships at Southern Hills Golf Course in Tulsa, Okla. (75-69-70--214, 4-over par, four strokes behind the leader). He recorded a 1-under 69 in the second round and followed that up with an even-par 70 in the final round for a 4-over 214 total, which was good for a fourth-place tie individually. That is the highest finish by a Buffalo since Matt Call also tied for fourth in the 1999 event at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kan. He became the first Buff to make the All-Big 12 Tournament Team since Stephen Carroll in 2003, and just the sixth overall since the conference was formed 10 years ago. McGlasson's 70 his last time around the Southern Hills' track was his best final round of his senior season, and also enabled him to be one of just five players to shoot par or better in two of the three rounds in the conference tournament. McGlasson was joined only by Matthew Rosenfeld, the medalist, and Jeff Bell (Texas), Pablo Martin (Oklahoma State) and Robert Gates (Texas A&M) in that feat. McGlasson's red number was one of just four in the second round, and the first round under par by a Buffalo in a Big 12 Championship since 2002, when Matt Zions shot a final round 69 at Prairie Dunes. It also was CU's first sub par score in a second round in the conference meet in 14 years. He finished the tournament with nine birdies, 13 bogeys and the rest all pars, as he birdied four of his last seven holes to make the All-Tournament Team.
Barringer, an Oviedo, Fla. (Oviedo) native, recorded the 12th best time in CU history in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her time of 10:19.08 at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational. The time is the fastest debut in the steeplechase for a Buff as this was her first attempt at the event wearing black and gold. She also became the fourth fastest female at CU to run the steeplechase. Barringer's time was a regional qualifying mark and it ranks second in the Big 12, third in the Midwest Region and eighth nationally.
Others nominated for this week's award were: Eric Molnar (men's tennis), Bret Schoolmeester (men's track and field) and Jessica Vanderdys (women's tennis).
Men's Tennis: Eric Molnar, Junior, Guelph, Ontario
Molnar upset No. 51 Adrian Prpic of Texas Tech, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles for his 25th victory of the year helping Colorado to a 4-3 quarterfinal victory over the Red Raiders. It was the Buffaloes first win in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament since the 1996-97 season (10 years). Molnar also teamed with Marko Bundalo at No. 1 doubles for the key doubles point win. Molnar has won eight of his last 11 matches and is currently the highest nationally ranked CU player (No. 59). The Buffaloes are 19-8 and ranked No. 25 in the country.
Men's Track and Field: Bret Schoolmeester, Senior, Sedalia, Colo.
Schoolmeester ran the 5k at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational on April 30, and finished with the fourth best time in the race in 13 minutes and 39.81 seconds. The mark was a regional qualifying time and a personal record as he bested his previous mark of 13:50.24 by over 10 seconds. This was his first race in the 5k during the outdoor season, the time is the best in the Big 12 Conference, the Midwest Region and ranks sixth overall in the country.
Women's Tennis: Jessica Vanderdys, Senior, Centreville, Va.
Vanderdys ended her stellar four-year career by winning her 72nd singles and 66th doubles match of her career in Colorado's 4-3 loss to Kansas at the Big 12 Tennis Championships. Vanderdys took a straight-set winner over Ksenia Bukina 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 singles position, and then teamed with Gleisy Torres Torres at No. 1 doubles for her second victory of the match. Vanderdys moved into 11th place on Colorado's all-time singles list and tied for second on the all-time doubles list.
