October 10, 2007 | Volleyball

LAWRENCE, Kan. ?Lauren Schaefer led the Buffs with team-high 16 kills and hit .308, but the University of Colorado volleyball team fell short against the University of Kansas Jayhawks on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Horejsi Arena in Lawrence. Game scores were 23-30, 26-30, 30-22 and 27-30.

Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week Callie Webster recorded a team-high 19 digs and Alex Buth contributed 13 kills, but it wasn't enough to push CU to victory. Emilee Sisco tallied 15 kills and Schylur Edleman had 10 kills to round out CU's performers with double-digit kills. Kaitlyn Burkett dished out an impressive 54 assists, topping KU's Katie Martincich who put in 34.

The Jayhawks grabbed the lead from the beginning of the first game. The Buffs were only able to tie the game but never stole the lead. Kansas closed the game with two kills by Jenna Kaiser and a service ace by Karina Garlington.

Kaiser led her team with 19 kills in the match. Kansas hit .548 with 20 kills on 31 attempts in the first game, while Colorado hit .242 with 11 kills on 33 attempts.

The Buffs kept the second game close until the Jayhawks tied the game at 26-26 and held CU off for the remainder of the game, sealing their victory with three blocks by Natalie Uhart and Kaiser.

The Buffs came out strong in the third game, holding off the Jayhawks and keeping the lead for the entire game. KU hit .000 to CU's .237. A block by Burkett and Schaefer and a kill by Schaefer secured the final two points of the game for the Buffs.

During the fourth game, the Buffs had a promising lead up until two kills by Kaiser tied the game at 25-25, and the Jayhawks took over from that point. Two kills by Mallori Gibson tied the game again at 27-27, but the Buffs couldn't hold off a service ace by Emily Brown and a kill by Kaiser.

Kansas grabbed 81 digs, powering past Colorado's 54. The Jayhawks also outdid the Buffs with 64 assists over 57.

Melissa Manda earned a match-high 24 digs for KU and three of her teammates also entered double-digit digs. Martincich, Brown, and Garlington added 16, 14, and 12, respectively.

Colorado fell to 5-11 overall and 0-8 in the Big 12 with the loss. The Buffs have lost eight straight matches which is the longest losing streak in CU history.

The Buffs will be on the road again on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Texas A&M at 6 p.m. in College Station, Texas.
