Charles and Pytlewski Earn CU Athlete of the Week Honors
October 18, 2007 | Football, General, Women's Golf
BOULDER-- Football running back Hugh Charles (senior) and women's golfer Dominique Pytlewski (sophomore), were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of October 15-21. This is the first CU athlete of the week award of the year for Charles and the second consecutive honor for Pytlewski. This is Charles' second career honor, but his first came in track and field. Pytlewski's honor marks only the tenth time in 695 opportunities that a women's golfer has earned this honor and the first time a women's golfer has won it in back-to-back weeks.
Charles, a Keller, Texas (Keller) native, carried the ball 22 times for 171 yards rushing and touchdown in Colorado's 47-20 loss at Kansas State. The game marks the ninth 100-yard rushing game of his career, his fourth in a row (the most since TB Chris Brown had eight consecutive games reaching the century mark in 2002). It was a career-high for Charles, as his best previous game of 132 yards came against Oklahoma State in Stillwater in 2005 and the most by a Buff player since Bobby Purify had 189 in the 2004 season opener versus Colorado State. He now has 2,192 career rushing yards, as he vaulted from 15th to 12th all-time at Colorado; he passed J.J. Flannigan (2,096); Merwin Hodel (2,102) and Kayo Lam (2,140). Cortlen Johnson (11th, 2,199) and Lamont Warren (10th, 2,242) are
between him and the top 10 all-time at CU. He now has 523 yards this season.
Pytlewski, a Vancouver, B.C., (Saint Thomas Aquinas) native, followed up a runner-up performance last week with her first career tournament win when she fired a 1-over 220 to take the individual title at the Texas Tech McHaney/Morehead Invitational. She became just the third player in Colorado women's golf history to win a tournament and is the first to do so since the 2004-05 season. She currently leads all Buffaloes with five sub-par rounds (out of 12 played). Pytlewski was also named the Big 12 Conference women's golfer of the month.
Others nominated for this week's award were Stephen Pifer (cross country), Jenny Barringer (cross country) and Nikki Marshall (soccer).
Cross Country: Stephen Pifer, Senior, Edwardsville, Ind.
Pifer earned his highest collegiate finish by placing third at the La Verne Gibson Cross Country Course at the Wabash Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind. The Colorado men's squad placed second, led by Pifer's time of 23:16.7 in the eight kilometer. His time was better than 232 other competitors in the race. Pifer also earned Big 12 Conference runner of the week honors for his performance.
Cross Country: Jenny Barringer, Junior, Oviedo, Fla.
Barringer ran a La Verne Course record of 19.49 in the 6K the pre-nationals race was the first of Barringer's season. She defeated 234 other competitors to claim her second career cross country title. Barringer led the second-ranked Colorado women's squad to a sixth place finish. Last season she finished third at pre-nationals in a time of 20:09.8, an improvement by just over 20 seconds. Barringer defeated North Carolina's Brianna Felnagle, the white race runner-up, by more than seven seconds (19:56.7). Barringer also earned Big 12 Conference runner of the week honors for her performance.
Soccer: Nikki Marshall, Sophomore, Mead, Colo.
Marshall is currently riding a four-game scoring streak as she wrapped up the weekend with a goal in each of the Baylor and Texas A&M matches. Marshall leads all Buffs with eight goals, two assists and 18 points on the season.
