Colorado Postgame Notes

Quickly This was the second straight game in Lubbock where CU took a 14-0 lead in the first half; in 2003, Tech rallied for a 26-21 win, but this time CU grabs a 5-point win... For the first time in the 9-game series, the visiting team left as the victor... Colorado survived the Tech offensive challenge and extended its streak to 41 games where the opponent has not gained 500 yards; only five teams have longer streaks (Maryland 82, Penn State 71, Utah 50, Florida State 48 and Alabama 46)... Alex Trlica was 2-of-3 on field goals, but his miss was only the second by an opponent in 15 tries this season against CU... Colorado was 7-of-16 on third downs, the average length to go being 5.2 yards (10 of 16 tries from five yards or less, going 6-10); by comparison, Tech was 3-of-9 but on average had 8.3 yards to earn...Colorado's 217 rushing yards was its second most of the season (the Buffs had 359 against Miami-Ohio)... P Matt DiLallo had a solid day, with his second longest punt of the year (54 yards); his gross average was 43.8 and his net was 37.3, knocked down a but due to only the second touchback in 38 punts this year... This was CU's first turnover-free game in 2007 (last was at Nebraska in the '06 season finale)...The Buffs had just three penalties and now have just seven over the last two games... Graham Harrell's 46 completions were a record against Colorado, topping the old mark of 39 by San Diego State's Adam Hall (Sept. 7, 2002); his 431 yards were the second most ever in the regular season (439, Lynn Dickey, Kansas State 1969); the 62 attempts were the third most against CU (record is 65, by Tech's Kliff Kingsbury in 2002)... PK Tyler Cope made his seventh solo tackle on kickoff coverage; if school records were kept for that, he'd own it; CU kickers had three this decade before this season... CU is now 13-0 all-time when not committing a turnover or allowing a sack... Lubbock proved hospitable for Colorado this weekend, as the CU cross country teams left here Friday with titles, the 12th straight by the men and ninth in a row by the women.

3-0 vs. THE BIG BAD SOUTH Colorado had it with all the talk about South dominance, especially since the North did the same the first five years on the conference but it wasn't played up the same way, and the Buffs responded with their first sweep of the South Division since 1998. The Buffs own the best record against the South by any North team at 21-15. The Buffs have won the season series against the South eight times in 12 years, also doing so in 1996 (3-0), 1998 (3-0), 1999 (2-1), 2000 (2-1), 2001 (2-1), 2002 (2-1) and 2005 (2-1). 231 & COUNTING Colorado scored in its 231st consecutive game, adding to the fifth longest active streak in the nation and the 11th longest of all-time; CU has now also scored in 146 straight league games (all 95 in Big 12 Conference play including four title games), and has scored in 91 straight road games... It was the 95th time that CU extended the streak on its first possession, and the 209th time the run has been extended by halftime (161 times in the first quarter). The Buffs are closing in on the top 10 streaks of all-time, as Florida State (232, 1988-2006) and Nebraska (233, 1971-1991) are just ahead.

TB HUGH CHARLES (20-121, 1 TD RUSHING; 5-26, 1 TD RECEIVING) CU's senior tailback had the 10 100-yard rushing game of his career, his fifth in the last six, and on his 31-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, he officially passed Lamont Warren (2,242) to enter the top 10 on CU's all-time career rushing list. He finished the game with 2,352 yards, as he ended the day in ninth place as he also passed Lee Rouson (2,296). He jumped from 11th into eighth place in all-purpose yards, ending the day with 149 for 2,830, skipping past James Mayberry (1975-78, 2,719), Rae Carruth (1992-96, 2,736) and Chris Brown (2001-02, 2,766).

ILB JORDON DIZON (9 TACKLES; 1-42, 1 TD INT RET) The senior linebacker and BUTKUS AWARD SEMIFINALIST scored the first touchdown of his career, when he read Graham Harrell's first pass of the second half perfectly, picked it off and returned it 42 yards into the end zone. It was the second interception of his career, he had his first at Baylor earlier this month (thus, both of his career picks have taken place in the state of Texas). He unofficially had nine tackles (coaches video tomorrow will produce official total for CU use); if in fact the nine hold up, he will become the fifth player in school history to have 400 in a career. “It was one of those deals where he really just threw me the ball, so I figured I might as well catch it. My job on that play is to read his eyes once he gets out of the pocket and get into position to make a play, and he threw it right at me,” Dizon told KOA-Radio postgame postgame.

QB CODY HAWKINS (26-15-0, 123, 2 TD; 1-9 RECEIVING) He tied the school record for the most consecutive games with a touchdown pass with nine, matching Koy Detmer' mark set in 1996; his interception streak came to an end, as he had thrown one in all eight games before today (also was a school record)... He upped his season passing total to 2,090 yards, recording the 12th 2,000-yard passing season in school history, but the first freshman to do so (he already owns the passing yards mark by a frosh, passing Craig Ochs (1,778) last weekend... He is the fourth underclassman (all sophomores, obviously) to have reached 2,000 or more in a season, joining Kordell Stewart (2,109 in 1992), John Hessler (2,136 in 1995) and Joel Klatt (2,614 in 2003) in doing so... He also had the first reception by a quarterback since 2004, when Bernard Jackson threw an 18-yard pass to Joel Klatt against Texas A&M. His 12-yard run in the first quarter was the first double-digit scamper of his career; he had several 7-yard gains previously. “I've always felt my natural position was wide receiver, so it was nice to go out there and showcase my skills,” Hawkins joked on KOA-Radio postgame.

CB TERRENCE WHEATLEY (3-30 INT; 4-82 KICKOFF RETURNS) The senior cornerback picked off his 12th, 13th and 14th career passes, tying Dick Anderson for third on CU's all-time list; he is the first Buff to pick two off in the same game since last year's game against Tech, when Ryan Walters snared a pair of Harrell passes...BUT he is the first to pick off three in a game since Victor Scott picked off three at Oklahoma State on Oct. 16, 1982 (a wild 25-25 tie). With 82 kickoff return yards, he now has 1,242 for his career, passing M.J. Nelson (1,198) and Walter Stanley (1,172)into second place all-time at Colorado; Ben Kelly (1997-99) leads with 1,798. He did a decent job on Tech's freshman phenom Michael Crabtree (12-131, 1 TD), as he paid him a huge compliment: “He is by far the best receiver I have ever played against in college, and he was the biggest challenge I've had by far. I am going to follow him the rest of his career to see what he does,” Wheatley said about Crabtree on KOA's postgame show.

.

CRABTREE SETS NCAA FRESHMAN RECEPTIONS RECORD

Freshman wide receiver Michael Crabtree's 11th reception of the game (0:07 seconds left in third quarter ? resulted in a 19-yard touchdown) made him the new NCAA receptions leader by a freshman.  The previous record was also held by a Red Raider as Taurean Henderson caught 98 passes during his freshman campaign in 2002.  Crabtree snapped his two-game scoring draught when he caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Graham Harrell with seven seconds remaining in the third quarter.

NOTING THE RED RAIDERS

?         The last time Texas Tech was shutout in three consecutive quarters was during the second half at Oklahoma and the first quarter against Oklahoma State last year.

?         Alex Trlica snapped Tech's scoreless streak with 5:12 remaining in the second quarter when he kicked a 30-yard field goal to put the Red Raiders on the board for the first time since the second quarter of last week's game at Missouri.

?         The last time Texas Tech was held without a touchdown in the first half at home was against Nebraska back in 2000.

?         For the second straight week, Tech quarterback Graham Harrell had a pass intercepted and returned for a touchdown.  Jordan Dizon returned an INT 42 yards with 10:50 remaining in the third quarter to give the Buffaloes a 23-6 lead.

?         Following the interception return, Harrell found junior receiver Eric Morris on a 31-yard touchdown strike that marked Tech's first touchdown since the second quarter of last week's Missouri game.  The touchdown reception was his fifth of the season.
