Colorado-Iowa State Notes

November 10, 2007 | Football

Quickly Coach Dan Hawkins' celebrated his 47th birthday today (he is now 1-2 on the b-day; he won 28-21 at Hawaii in 2001 and lost 27-7 at Fresno State in 2005 in addition to today)... Colorado now leads the series by a 47-14-1 count, 24-8 in Ames, 21-3 dating back to 1984 and 19-5 in games played in November... Riar Geer's 28-yard reception was the fifth by Colorado on fourth down this season, all by tight ends (his second, Tyson DeVree has the other three)... S Lionel Harris had his third career interception subbing for the injured S Ryan Walters; it led to a second quarter touchdown...  CB Terrence Wheatley (foot) also did not dress; CU hopes to regain his services for the Nebraska game on Nov. 23... TB Brian Lockridge's 47-yard run near the end of the first half was the longest by a Buff this season, besting his 43-yard TD run for a score against Miami... PK Kevin Eberhart made both the 50- and 55-yard field goals at the end of the game, the last of which if granted by the officials would have been a career long... P Matt DiLallo had only his third touchback of the season (56 punts)... Iowa State gained 191 of its 351 yards in the third quarter... CU still needs at least one win to become bowl-eligible, as the Buffs have played in bowl in 17 of the last 22 seasons (dating to 1985, with 1987, 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2006 being the lone exceptions; only the '87 team, with a 7-4 record, qualified out of that group but did not receive an invitation)... Captains: TB Hugh Charles joined regulars OT Tyler Polumbus and ILB Jordon Dizon in place of the injured Wheatley.

233 & COUNTING  Colorado scored in its 233rd consecutive game (last shutout: 7-0 at Nebraska on Nov. 12, 1988), adding to the fifth longest active streak in the nation and now tying the ninth longest of all-time; CU has now also scored in 149 straight league games (all 99 in Big 12 Conference play including four title games), and has scored in 92 straight road games... The Buffs tied Nebraska for the ninth longest streak in NCAA history; the list (Michigan extended its streak to 286 today, two others (*) play later):

500  This was the 500th road game in Colorado history (opponent stadiums, does not include neutral sites); the Buffs are now 255-227-18 (.528) all-time on the road.

FROSH STARTS With four starts today by freshmen, CU has had starts made by 45 freshmen (27 redshirt, 18 true); that is a school record, as the old mark was 42 in 1998 (34 redshirt, 8 true).  This is the fourth time freshmen have accounted for 40 starts, as that many started in 1987 and 1991.

WR DUSTY SPRAGUE (4-55, 0 TD RECEIVING)     The senior wide receiver became the ninth player in CU history to catch 100 passes, ending the day with 102 for 1,239 for his careet; he remained ninth in all-time receptions but moved into 10th in all-time receiving yards, as he passed D.J. Hackett (1,194), Darrin Chiaverini (1,199), Ron Brown (1,217) and Marcus Stiggers (1,223) this afternoon.

ILB JORDON DIZON (12 TACKLES, 3 TZ, 3 3DS) The senior linebacker tied the school record for third down stops in a season with 18; the three today also gave him 47 for his career, tying Greg Biekert for the all-time school record.  His tackle count will become official tomorrow, but he'll have 131 by NCAA calculations, and 133-plus what the coaches tally Sunday by CU standards.

TB HUGH CHARLES (21-83 RUSHING, 1 TD, 2-40 RECEIVING, 6-161 KICKOFF RETURNS, 284 ALL-PURPOSE YARDS)  CU's senior tailback moved into seventh on the all-time rushing list, as he finished the game with 2,490 yards for his career, passing Herchell Troutman (2,487); he also now has 3,295 all-purpose yards, moving into sixth all-time, passing Kaylo Lam (3,112), Carroll Hardy (3,115) and Charlie Davis (3,164).

QB CODY HAWKINS (40-23-0, 262, 2 TD)   Hawkins now has 2,452 yards on the season, the sixth highest single season total in school history.  He has 17 TD passes on the year, now the fifth highest, trailing 22 by Koy Detmer (1996), 21 by Joel Klatt (2003), 20 by John Hessler (1995) and 18 by Mike Moschetti (1999).

INJURIES   None; the trainers only trip off the sidelines was regarding WR Scotty McKnight, who had the wind knocked out of him; OG Edwin Harrison was spelled a few plays due to his chronic knee.  Older stuff: FS Ryan Walters (concussion), day-to-day; CB Terrence Wheatley (foot), questionable (for Nebraska).
