Pifer and Barringer Run to CU Athlete of the Week Honors

November 13, 2007 | Cross Country, General

BOULDER-- Cross country standouts Stephen Pifer (senior) and Jenny Barringer (junior), were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of November 5-11. This is the first CU athlete of the week of the year for Pifer and the second for Barringer.  Pifer now has four career honors, while Barringer now has ten moving into a tie for second place on the all-time winner list with former men's basketball star Shaun Vandiver.

Pifer, an Edwardsville, Ill. (Edwardsville) native, took sixth with a time of 30 minutes and 28.3 seconds to lead the sixth-ranked Buffs to another Mountain Region title, their fifth in as many years. Brent Vaughn led the men for the majority of the race until Pifer passed Vaughn with about 100 meters to go in the 10k race. Colorado recorded 47 points in the win, besting runner-up and No. 3 UTEP who finished with 59 points. Northern Arizona, the second-ranked team in the country, finished third with 84 points.

Barringer, an Oviedo, Fla., (Oviedo) native, paced the 13th-ranked Buffs with a runner-up finish. It was the second consecutive year at the regional that she has finished in the runner-up position. She finished in 19:43.9 and behind Texas Tech's Sally Kipeygo who ran the 6k course in 19:29.4. Kipeygo and Barringer were running 1-2 the entire race. Barringer finished about 51 second ahead of the third-place finisher in Northern Arizona's Lisa Paulson (20:34.8).

Others nominated for this week's award were Jordon Dizon (football), Michael Baird (men's golf) and Emilee Sisco (volleyball).

Football: Jordon Dizon, Senior, Kauai, Hawai'i

Dizon recorded 12 tackles (8 solo), three third stops and three stops for no gain. The senior linebacker tied the school record for third down stops in a season with 18; the three against Iowa State also gave him 47 for his career, tying Greg Biekert for the all-time school record.

Men's Golf: Michael Baird, Senior, Castle Rock, Colo.

Baird led CU to a fourth place finish in the Michigan Wolverine Intercollegiate, tying for seventh overall with a 73-70-77:220 scorecard. It was his best collegiate finish (previous had been two eighths), as he played the par fives well in this meet (9-under) and recorded the second-most birdies in the field with 14 on the 6,923-yard, par-72 El Campeon Course at Mission Inn Resort, located in an Orlando suburb. He finished nine shots out of the lead.

Volleyball: Emilee Sisco, Sophomore, Enumclaw, Wash.

Sisco became just the seventh Buff in CU history to record 30 or more kills in a match when she recorded 30 against Kansas on Nov. 10. She joins teammate Amber Sutherland, who recorded 35 kills against Missouri on Sept. 13, 2006, in this exclusive club. Sisco also led CU against NU with 13 kills. She hit .245 on the week and averaged 5.38 kills per game.
