Soccer Quotes

Colorado Head Coach Bill Hempen

GENERAL?““Since I've known about Portland they have always been a very skillful and technical team.  You can't make any errors against them and we only made one.  I feel bad for my number 3 (Michelle Wenino) because she has been so great for us all year and she is really taking this loss personal.  It isn't anyone's fault, we weren't getting shot, and especially not on goal and you can't win if you don't get shots on goal.”

ON PORTLAND'S GOAL?“It wasn't that deflating, we still had 30 minutes and a TV timeout, and this was the perfect game for a TV timeout we really needed to get the girls together and talk some things over.”

ON LIMITING PORTLAND TO ONE GOAL?“I think our defense is faster then DU's was and we are better defensively from that standpoint.  We had to stand up to them and not let them dance like they wanted.  Our problem was we could get two or three passes together but we couldn't connect on the next pass that would have really put us into the danger zone, and that is a credit to them.”

ON THE SEASON?“I don't think it was a discouraging season, it was frustrating at times because we usually can string together five or six wins during the season and we weren't able to do that this season.  So it was probably a little discouraging for her (Nikki Marshall) from that standpoint because of how short of a time she has been here.”

FINAL THOUGHT?““We certainly represented Division I soccer today.”

Colorado Defender Nikki Marshall

ON THEIR GAMEPLAN?“We didn't come in here trying to limit their offense, we came in wanting to attack.  That is just Colorado soccer, we don't play to tie we play to win.”

ON BEING TIED AT HALFTIME?“It didn't affect our confidence because we knew we could play with them.  It was just good to know that it was still tied 0-0 with the No.3 team in the country and if we could finish an opportunity and put one in the back of the net we'd be golden.”

ON PORTLAND'S GOAL?“It really didn't change anything very much, if anything it gave us more motivation to step up and make something happen.”

ON MAKING IT TO THE NCAA TOURNAMENT?“I felt we were deserving of the opportunity, we just had to come out here and prove it.  We definitely did that today against a great team and one of the top teams in the nation.”

ON THE SEASON?“I think we didn't fully play to our potential until the Texas game, and unfortunately that was our last conference game of the year.  Today we showed what we're capable of and that we can play with any team in the country.”

Colorado Midfielder Nikki Keller

ON PORTLAND?“They are a team that is very skillful and they like to dance on the ball, very technical in that aspect.  That is different from the Big 12 because Big 12 teams are big and fast.  We wanted to stay tight on them and stay between them and the goal and we did a good job of that today.”

ON OFFENSIVE STRUGGLES?“We had one or two passes and then we'd get the ball outside we just really struggled to get the ball into the box where we could really create some opportunities.”

GENERAL?“We're not happy about the loss but it a close game and we played hard.  We can leave here with our heads held high.”

Colorado Goalkeeper Kara Linder

ON THE SEASON?“We went through some rough spots this year but I'm proud that we made it to the second round of the playoffs.  We just lost to a good team today but we played Portland tough and I'm proud of our effort.”

Portland Head Coach Garrett Smith

GENERAL?“I thought it was a great game and I give a lot of credit to Colorado because they had a great game plan, they executed it well and they made it a tough experience for us and tough to play against.  You don't do what they did against Texas without being a very good, capable team.  They played us tough all match and we're fortunate to be leaving with a win.”

ON COLORADO?“We usually have teams sit in on us and they didn't do that, they attacked.  This is the playoffs and they played us tough all game and that is how it should be; you shouldn't have 5-0 and 3-0 games it should be tough.  No one wants to come in here and play because they're a tough team and this is a tough place to play.”

Portland Midfielder Sophie Schmidt

ON PLAYING A CLOSE GAME?“We had confidence it would come, we were getting some chances we just had to finish and we thought it was just a matter of time before that'd happen.”

ON COLORADO?“They are a very, very aggressive team and they came out with a lot of confidence and fought tooth and nail all game and it really showed.  We knew coming in that it would be a tough game because they are a good team, we just had to come out and play hard and I think we did that.”

Portland Forward Michelle Enyeart

ON THEIR GOAL?“I took the ball from their defender and just saw Soph (Sophie Schmidt) and gave a good touch across and Sophie finished for us and put it in the net.”
