Charles and Barringer Run to CU Athlete of the Week Honors

BOULDER- Football running back Hugh Charles (senior) and cross country standout Jenny Barringer (junior), were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of November 17-24. This is the second CU athlete of the week award of the year for Charles and the third for Barringer. Charles now has three for his career, while Barringer now has 11 which moves her into sole possession of second place on the all-time list.
Charles, a Keller, Texas (Keller) native, had 327 all-purpose yards, the sixth most in school history; he had a career-high 33 carries for 169 yards (second most single game yards; 102 of them came post-contact), his 11th 100-yard game and sixth this season. He caught one pass for 33 yards and returned five kickoffs for 125 yards. He scored three touchdowns (all rushing), and earned 8 first downs. He finished his CU career with 2,659 rushing yards, passing James Mayberry into sixth place all-time (1975-78; 2,544) and just shy of fifth (Chris Brown, 2001-02; 2,690). He became the second player in school history to rush for 2,500 and catch 500 in passes in a CU career, finishing with 2,659 and 552 (joining Bobby Purify, 2000-04; 3,016 & 508). His 327 all-purpose yards Friday (1-33 receiving, 5-125 KOR) was the seventh 300-yard such game in school history (sixth most), and gave him 3,622 for his career to propel him into second all-time behind Eric Bieniemy (4,351).
Barringer, an Oviedo, Fla., (Oviedo) native, led the 22nd ranked women with her second-straight national runner-up performance as she completed the 6K race in 19:49.7. Texas Tech's Sally Kiyego repeated as national champion with a course-record 19:30.9. Her time eclipsed the previous mark of 19:49.3 set by Barringer at the pre-nationals race on Oct. 13. It is the fourth career sub-20 minute 6K for Barringer who was also the 2007 Big 12 and Mountain Region runner-up. Barringer, claiming her second cross country All-American honor, took an aggressive approach to Monday's race allowing her to close the gap with the Texas Tech junior. Kiyego won last year's title at LaVern by 28 seconds, but her margin narrowed to 17 in this race.
Others nominated for this week's award were Brent Vaughn (cross country) and Jackie McFarland (women's basketball).

Vaughn earned his third cross country All-American honor by placing fifth overall. Vaughn, the 2007 Big 12 Conference individual champion, finished the 10-kilometer course in 29 minutes, 27.4 seconds. Vaughn finished just 25 seconds off the pace as Josh McDougal of Liberty took top individual honors with a time of 29:22.4. Vaughn was also the top finisher among Big 12 runners.
Women's Basketball: Jackie McFarland, Senior, Derby, Kan.
McFarland averaged 18 points, 11 rebounds and 6.5 assists a game last week. McFarland shot scored 24 points (7-of-13 from the floor and 10-of-11 from the free throw line), 11 rebounds (six of which were offensive) and six assists on Friday against Sienna. In Saturday's game against Rice, McFarland recorded 12 points (4-of-6 FG and 3-of-4 FT), 11 rebounds (three offensive) and seven assists.
