HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS,
Host and No. 41 Michigan shot the best the team total for the final round and cruised to a 10-stroke win, posting an 8-over par 872 team score to best No. 11 Penn State, which finished with an 882 total.
No. 57 Illinois grabbed third (885), while Colorado dropped into fourth with an 895 score; the No. 69 (GolfStat) Buffaloes had been tied for second but struggled to a 307 score for the final 18 holes, 18 strokes worse than what the victorious Wolverines put into the books Tuesday.
The Buffs made the second birdies (41) in the tournament, but the third fewest pars (154), scoring well on the par threes (+11, third best) and fives (-15, tied for first) but played the par fours to the tune of 57-over, tied for last.
Senior Michael Baird posted his best collegiate finish, as he tied for seventh with a 4-over 220 total despite a 77 in the final round. He played the par fives well in this meet (9-under) and recorded the second-most birdies in the field with 14 on the 6,923-yard, par-72 El Campeon Course at Mission Inn Resort, located in this
Freshman Michael Imperato posted his career best finish, tying for 13th, closing with a 78 for a 223 score, or 7-over par. He had a pretty good first semester in college, posting four top 40 finishes in five meets.
Sophomore Justin Bardgett posted his first-ever top 20 finish in tying for 17th, as he closed with CU's best effort in the final round, a 3-over 75, for a 226 total. He was third in par-3 scoring for the tournament, playing the 12 at 1-under overall.
Junior Derek Tolan (77?228) and sophomore Luke Symons (81?236), rounded out CU's team efforts, tying for 24th and 50th, respectively.
Senior Jim Grady played as an individual here, closing out with a 76 for a 229 total, tying him for 29th.
“We quite honestly had hoped for a better day, as it's disappointing to enter the final round in contention, playing with the leaders, and just not do a better job of hanging in there until the end,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “We knew we'd likely finish somewhere between first and fourth when the day started, but had our sights set on going in the other direction.”
Michigan's Tim Schaetzel, the first round outright leader and co-leader through 36 holes, shot the only round in the 60s Tuesday in recording a 3-under 69 for a 211 in the tournament, his 5-under par overall effort good for a three-shot victory over Iowa's Cole Peevler. The two went into the final round tied, but Peevler shot a 72 for a 214 total.
“We made a lot of strides this fall, and I know the guys will be excited to get things going again in January,” Edwards added. “But they've been at it for the most part for the last 10 months including last spring and summer amateur play, so it's time to step away a little bit, concentrate on upcoming finals and come back refreshed in a couple of months.”
CU will resume its season the first week of February in the Hawai'i-Hilo Intercollegiate.
