MBB Hosts Nationally Ranked Jayhawks Wednesday Night
February 13, 2007 | Men's Basketball
FOR STARTERS: Tonight's match up is the latest Kansas (21-4, 8-2 Big 12) has traveled to Colorado (6-14, 2-8) for a Big 12 game. The latest was Feb. 16, 1998 when KU took an 81-72 win. The last time KU visited Boulder and it wasn't campus winter break, the Buffaloes upset the then-No. 6 Jayhawks, 60-59 on Jan. 22, 2003. In fact, it's CU's only win in the last 35 of 36 games dating back to March 8, 1991 (Big 8 Tournament, Kansas City) ... CU's 2-8 start after 10 conference games matches the 1998-99 season. The last time CU started 2-9 in conference play was the 1994-95 season. Complete Notes attached.
CU vs. kU: This is the second meeting of the season between the two schools. Back on Jan. 27, No. 8/8 Kansas defeated CU, 97-74 (box score, story on page 25). Richard Roby netted his sixth career 30-point effort, in a game that CU committed 30 turnovers, their most since committing 30 back on Jan. 26, 1991 at Kansas. Coach Patton teams are 1-24 against the Jayhawks.
MORAL VICTORIES: In 11 home games against the Jayhawks under Coach Patton, CU's deficit is only 79.7-to-70.3. Only two of those years, KU was not nationally ranked (2005-06, 1998-99).
JUST IN CASE: Colorado last defeated a top-10 ranked team they did it in back-to-back home games: Feb. 19, No. 6/6 Kansas (60-59) and Feb. 4, No. 3/3 Texas (93-80).
QUICKLY ON the jayhawks: As always, KU is rolling along toward another NCAA Tournament appearance having won eight of their last 10 conference games and a 4-1 record on the road. In those five games, KU is outscoring the opponent 76.4-to-63.8. Team Averages and probable starting lineup on page 1.
HOOK SHOTS: With only 66 rebounds last season, Dominique Coleman leads CU on the boards with 124 (6.2); he's first in assists (69, 3.5), steals (33, 1.7); third in scoring (11.0 ppg.)...Richard Roby is 23 points from 10th place on the all-time scoring list (1,330)...In his last four games, Jeremy Williams is 10.3 ppg., 5.8 rpg. with six assists, five steals and 16-for-31 (.516) from the field...Xavier Silas' 10 turnovers at K-State was the third most of any CU player in a single game...In Big 12-only games, Coleman is tied for second in rebounding (6.0), the highest CU player in any category...Roby is averaging 16.6 ppg., 4.4 rpg. in five games against KU...Silas has led in scoring five of his last seven...Roby's five points at K-State, was only his 10th career game under double-digits (80 career). TEAM: CU is averaging 32.3 pts. for their first 20 minutes of play (oppt.: 39.2)...Opponent starters are scoring 100 points more than CU's (1,124-to-1024)...CU has used 10 different starting combos in 20 games and have used the same starting lineup four straight games...11-14 at home against ranked opponents since 1996...Scored under 60 pts., six times; three of those in Big 12 play (at KSU, at NU, at OU)...Last time won less than three conf. games was 1995-96 under interim coach Patton (three); two wins ties the 2-12 team in 1993-94 (Big 8).
X Factor: Since leading the team in scoring five of the last seven games, freshman Xavier Silas has also led the team in assists three times and twice in steals. His production during this stretch is 14.3 ppg. (leads the team), 4.3 rpg., 31-for-74 (.419), 12 3-pointers made (first). Overall, he's second in scoring (11.9 ppg.), one of six players over four boards a game and is second in minutes played (30.4).
50% FG% (opponents): The Buffs have allowed the opponent (at BU, at KU, Mizzou, at Nebraska) to shoot 50% FG or better in four of six games. The four straight games over 50% was a school first in 18 years. The last time this happened was the 1989-90 season when CU allowed five opponents to shoot 50% or better, TWICE. That year the Buffs finished 12-18 and 2-12 in the Big Eight. Six of CU's 10 Big 12 opponents this season have shot 50% or better.
end is near: On Oct. 25, Coach Patton announced this would be his last season of coaching at CU. Patton said he would not seek nor accept an extension of his contract (expires June 30, 2007). In 11 years, Patton has 183 victories, four NIT appearances, two NCAA Tournaments, and three 20-win seasons.
SINCE playing at KU (JAN. 27): Since the last time CU/KU played one another (three games ago), Richard Roby is only averaging 14.3 ppg. and shooting .300 from the field (11-for-33). In his three games since, he's averaging 6.7 rpg. with four steals and 18-for-21 from the free throw line.
LAST TIME OUT (complete box on page 22): Cartier Martin scored 10 of Kansas State's first 11 points of the second half and sparked the Wildcats to a 78-59 victory over Colorado, which lost its 10th straight Big 12 road game. CU was led by freshman Xavier Silas with 16 points. Senior Dominique Coleman added 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
crashing the boards: In 10 Big 12 games, CU has a quartet of players with at least 48 rebounds and all are averaging over 4.8 a game. Dominique Coleman tops the list (73, 7.3 rpg.), followed by Jeremy Williams (49, 4.9). Richard Roby (48, 4.8) and Marcus King-Stockton (48, 4.8) round out the list. Xavier Silas has 44 with a 4.4 rpg. average.
LOSSES AT HOME: With seven home losses this season, CU has matched the 2000-01 campaign for setbacks in a season. With three more home games left (KU, Kansas State, Nebraska), it looks like the Buffaloes will be a setting a school record for losses at home or at least tying it. The previous high is eight (1995-96, 1985-86, 1975-76).
TOP-10 SHOOTER: Richard Roby ranks among the top-10 field goals attempts list. Entering tonight's game, Roby has 1,095 attempts good enough for ninth place at CU. As for field goals made, Roby is a bit behind Scott Wedman's 10th place of 516. Roby has 453 field goals made.
FTs WHEN IT COUNTS: After 20 games, we're seeing what players are cool under pressure from the free throw line.
