Silas and McFarland Net CU Athlete of the Week Honors

BOULDER-- Freshman guard Xavier Silas (men's basketball) and junior forward Jackie McFarland (women's basketball) were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of February 11-17. This is the first CU athlete of the week award of the year for Silas and the second for McFarland. McFarland now has five career honors, tying her for the second most in women's basketball history.
Silas, an Austin, Texas, (Brewster Academy [Wolfeboro, N.H.]) native, averaged 12.5 points and four rebounds over a two-game period. Silas was the lone CU player in double-digits with 11 points in the Buffs 75-46 loss to Kansas; he also added six rebounds. In CU's loss at Texas Tech, Silas was one of four players in double figures with 14 points and was 5-for-10 from the field.
McFarland, a Derby, Kan., (Derby) native, averaged 15 points and ten rebounds in Colorado's two games last week. McFarland recorded 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting including 2-of-4 from three-point range, nine rebounds (five were offensive), two blocks and two steals in CU's 60-58 road win against Kansas State. She followed that performance up with her 15th double double of the season against Iowa State, the fourth most in a single season in CU history. In the Buffs 74-55 loss against the Cyclones, she registered 12 points, 11 rebounds (six offensive) and four assists.

Torres Torres won her lone singles match and added a doubles win helping the Colorado tennis team to a 6-1 road win over Texas Tech in it's Big 12 opener. Torres Torres defeated Kerryn Potgieter, 6-4, 6-3 for her fifth spring match victory and recorded her team-leading 14th win of the 2006-07 season. Colorado, ranked No. 53 nationally improves to 4-2 and 1-0 in the conference. In doubles, she teamed with Camila Belassi at No. 1 doubles for an 8-3 win for their team-best fifth win in six tries at the top doubles spot.
