Colorado-Texas Tech Quotes

February 03, 2007 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Kathy McConnell-Miller

General
“This team continues to make strides and I thought tonight was another one. We talked about how important it is in conference to win your home games. I'm very pleased with their performance and how they played down the stretch. Texas Tech has won no less than two or three games by less than three points and has come up and made big plays to win games. They are an experienced team, and for us to pull that one out at the end and show that we have been in that situation before, clearly tonight was just a different night. It was free throws, it was defensive stops, it was rebounding, and it was an all around team effort. I was very proud of every one of them and how they played for 40 minutes.”

On Offensive Rebounding

“It has been in the practice schedule in the last few days as far as going to the boards. We put a new little system in as far as offensive rebounding and rewarding you for offensive rebounds. This team is very reward oriented, trust me. I thought it showed tonight. I thought it was one of the differences in the game tonight.”

On the Play of Hannah Skildum

“I think Hannah (Skildum) has improved with every game. First and foremost, I see it in practice. Shortly after Christmas, Hannah didn't finish a practice, she was sent to the locker room. After that particular practice, I told her that I thought she needed a break. It started on the defensive end. I just thought that I saw a good difference in her, but she needed to bottle that a little bit. Since that point, I don't want her to not have that energy, that excitement, but just get it under control. Since that point, I've seen her taking care of that and showing why she should be on the floor.”

On the Play of Jasmina Ilic

“I was really pleased with her performance tonight because of the defense that was being played against her. There are times when Jasmina (Ilic), if she is hugged up on, a sense of frustration sets in and she becomes complacent. Tonight, I think it went the other direction. The energy that she created because of the defense I thought got her great looks. She got easy lay-ups, she got shots off the screen, and she pulled up in transition. This is probably one of the best defensive efforts I think a team has put on her, but instead of allowing that to frustrate her, I thought she really elevated her game.”

Colorado Players

Sr., F, Jasmina Ilic

On 1000 point milestone

“It feels good, but I think that the overall picture that we got over the hump and not letting the other team score on us in the last two minutes was a bigger achievement for our team.”

On home court

“I think that we have three more home games, and I think that our place is one of the toughest places to play, and we have been really good at home. Also the altitude helps us a lot, and the fans are constantly there and coming in larger numbers.”

So., F, Hannah Skildum

On hard foul received in 2nd half

“It is part of the game of basketball, and I was just happy to go to the free throw line and make a difference for our team.”

Jr., F, Jackie McFarland

On scoring go-ahead basket

“I don't know if we need to score that quick, but we needed to score. We had a play drawn up that had been working for us, and I think that I was the open person, and I got a good pass and was able to knock it down.”

On offensive rebounding

“It was a focus. We have always said that we need to go to the offensive boards more, but in the game against Kansas State we only had four offensive rebounds as a team, and that is something that one person should have, and not the whole team. We have been working a lot on it, and coach has been rewarding us for that increased intensity.”

Texas Tech Head Coach Kristy Curry

General

“I give Colorado credit.  You know what, they found a way down the stretch for a lot of reasons.  Again, Kathy's doing a great job. I praise them to the most ultimate, whatever.”

On The Physical Tone Of The Game

“We needed to attack and get ourselves to the foul line.  That's pretty much all you can do is try to be aggressive with your actions and try to have an attacking mentality and try to match it.  Obviously we couldn't match the thickness and the size, but as far as trying to attack, that's important.  Our goal is to almost always make more free throws than our opponents shoot and to always come out and be aggressive and attack.”

ON CU's 23 Offensive Rebounds

“That definitely made a difference in the game and I give them credit, but again, the physicality in the game was amazing.”

On Jasmina Ilic

“I think Ilic did what a senior did. She basically did the same thing to us that I saw her do [against] OU.  I giver her credit, she's a nice player.”
