Coleman and Zikova Named CU Athletes of the Week
February 06, 2007 | General, Men's Basketball, Skiing
BOULDER-Senior guard Dominique Coleman (men's basketball) and junior alpine skier Lucie Zikova were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of January 28-February 3. This is the first CU athlete of the week honor of the year for both Coleman and Zikova, while Zikova has three career awards.
Coleman, an Oakland, Calif., (Key West HS/Hillsborough JC [Fla.]) native, recorded his third career double-double helping the Colorado men's basketball team upset No. 12/14 Oklahoma Sate, 89-77. The Buffaloes broke a four-game losing streak and for the fifth straight season upset a ranked team at the Coors Events Center. Coleman tied his career-best with 21 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds. He also added three assists and two steals. Ten of Coleman's 21 points came from the free throw line where he shot 10-for-15. Earlier in the week, Coleman had eight points in CU's 97-83 loss at Baylor. For the season, Coleman is third in scoring at 10.8 points per game, first in rebounds (6.2) and first in assists (3.4).
Zikova, a Prague, Czech Republic, (Gymnazium Ustavni 400) native, won the giant slalom and slalom in the Denver Invitational, though the Buffs saw their five meet winning streak snapped in losing to the host Pioneers by 12 points. Zikova's win was the 10th of her career, becoming the sixth CU skier since the sport went coed in 1983 to reach double figures in wins. Being only a junior, she has as many as nine meets remaining to take over the top spot, both overall and in alpine. It was the third time Zikova won both the GS and slalom at the same meet, the only three by a Buffalo skier since 1994. Zikova now only trails John Skajem in all-time alpine meet sweeps, as he had four over the 1986-87 seasons.
Others nominated for this week's Jeremy Dodson (track and field), Matt Gelso (skiing), Jasmina Ilic (women's basketball), Gleisy Torres Torres (tennis) and Amberly Casey (track and field).
Track and Field: Jeremy Dodson, Sophomore, Denver, Colo.
Dodson broke the CU Indoor track & field school record in the 200-meter dash on Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Air Force Invitational. He ran a time of 21.12, which was also a provisional qualifying mark and ties for the fifth fastest time currently in the nation. It also ties the second-best mark in the Big 12 this season. Dodson broke the previous CU record of 21.34, set by Erik Mitchell in 1993. In just three meets as a Buff, he has become the fastest Buff in the 200 and is the fourth fastest in the 60-meter dash, setting a time of 6.76 last weekend at the Don Barrett Open.
Skiing: Matt Gelso, Freshman, Truckee, Calif.
Gelso finished third in both the men's 10-kilometer freestyle and the 15k classical races in the Denver Invitational. He now has five top three finish in six races this year, including one win.

Ilic helped Colorado to a 2-0 record last week with conference wins over Kansas State and Texas Tech. Ilic scored a game-high 27 points, passing the 1,000 point barrier in the process, and hit two late free-throws to seal a 70-67 win over Texas Tech University Saturday night at the Coors Events/Conference Center. In the game, Ilic was 9-of-16 from the floor including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. In addition to her outstanding offensive performance, Ilic also added four rebounds, a steal and a block. In CU's 66-55 come from behind win over Kansas State Ilic recorded nine points and four rebounds.

Torres Torres won a pair of singles matches and teamed up for another pair of doubles victories helping the Colorado tennis team to a 1-1 record against the Southeastern Conference. The No. 44 nationally ranked Buffaloes (3-1) defeated Mississippi State, 4-1 with Torres Torres winning her singles match 5-4 after her opponent defaulted her match. She teamed with teammate Camila Belassi for a victory at No. 1 doubles in which CU subsequently won. Against Alabama, Torres Torres teamed up with Belassi again for another victory at No. 1 doubles, then followed with a straight-set winner at No. 5 singles. She remains unbeaten in singles (4-0) and has won a team-best 13 victories for the year (13-2). In doubles, Torres Torres and Belassi are 3-1 as CU's top doubles team.
