Hazen and Milewski Named CU Athlete of the Week

March 20, 2007 | General, Tennis, Track and Field

BOULDER-- Track thrower, Zach Hazen (senior), and tennis standout Monica Milewski (sophomore) were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of March 12-18. This is the second CU athlete of the week award of the year for both athletes, and both now have three career honors. Milewski is now tied for second on the tennis all-time winner list, with current teammate and doubles partner Franziska Jendrian.

Hazen, a Germantown, Tenn., (Houston) native,  recorded a regional qualifying at the 2007 Potts Invitational on Saturday, March 17 in Boulder as the CU track & field team opened its outdoor season.  Hazen's mark was 192-03 in the hammer throw, good enough for first-place. It tied for fifth all-time in the CU record book, tying with former teammate Chase Mullen.

Milewski, a Park Ridge, Ill., (Main South) native, won a pair of singles and doubles matches helping the nationally ranked Colorado tennis team to an undefeated week with victories over No. 43 Oklahoma State, 4-3 (March 12) and No. 12 William & Mary, 4-3 (March 14). Milewski upset No. 5 Megan Moulton-Levy (William & Mary), 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 and defeated Iryna Tkachenko (Oklahoma State), 6-3, 6-3 at the No.1 singles position en route to her eighth straight victory.  Milewski rallied to defeat W&M's Moulton-Levy from being a set down clinching CU's team win over the previously unbeaten Tribe (11-1). Milewski trailed in the final set by 3-0 and 4-1 deficits winning five straight points for the 6-4 win over Moulton-Levy. She also remained unbeaten against the Big 12 (5-0) with her triumph over Tkachenko.

In doubles, she teamed with teammate Franziska Jendrian at No. 2 doubles for a pair of victories and won a key point with their victory over W&M, handing the Tribe its first loss this dual season in the doubles competition. Colorado is 10-3, their best start since the 1998-99 season and their 5-0 conference record is the best in school history. Milewski is a team-best 11-2 in spring singles, 5-0 in the Big 12 and 20-5 for the year. Milewski also earned her second Big 12 Conference Player of the Week award this year.

Others nominated for this week's Hannah Warfield-Ruffatto (track and field).

Track and Field: Hannah Warfield-Ruffatto, Junior, Castle Rock, Colo.

Warfield-Ruffatto took second in javelin behind Dana Pounds, the Potts Field record holder (186-10).  Ruffatto's throw was 161-05, while Pounds earned a mark of 172-10. Ruffatto's mark was the third-best all-time in CU history and good for a regional qualifying mark in the first meet of the outdoor season. Liz Lampros holds the top two marks of 169-05 and 162-10.
