April 18, 2007 | General, Track and Field
BOULDER-- Track standouts, senior Billy Nelson and sophomore Jenny Barringer, were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of April 9-15. This is the first CU athlete of the week award of the year for Nelson and the sixth for Barringer, good for the single most in a single academic year. Nelson has two career honors, while Barringer now has seven career honors, giving her sole-possession of the second most in cross country/track and field history.
Nelson, a Bakersfield, Calif., (Taft Union) native, finished the men's steeplechase with a time of 8:40.88, at the Mt. SAC relays this past Friday in Walnut, Calif. Nelson's time is the eleventh best time in school history, and was good for a fifth place finish. He also became the fifth fastest CU male in the steeplechase.
Barringer, an Oviedo, Fla., (Oviedo) native, led the Colorado women in the 1,500 meter run, finishing in second place with a mark of 4:21.53. She edged out teammate Liza Pasciuto who followed closely behind and finishing 15th with a 4:27.25 mark. Both times were good enough to surpass the regional qualifying mark. Barringer's time made her the fifth fastest female in the 1500m in CU history.
Others nominated for this week's award were Monica Milewski (tennis).
Tennis: Monica Milewski, Sophomore, Park Ridge, Ill.
Milewski went undefeated on the weekend, winning a pair of doubles and singles matches against Big 12 foes Kansas and Kansas State.
