BOULDER ? Kelly Jo Mullaney has signed a Financial Aid Agreement with the intent of transferring to the University of Colorado and joining the women's basketball team in 2007-08, CU head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller announced Monday.
Mullaney, a 5-8 guard from Minneapolis, Minn., will sit out the 2007-08 season due to NCAA transfer rules, but will be able to practice with the team. The season will be used as her redshirt year and she will be a sophomore in eligibility for the 2008-09 campaign.
“We're excited to have Kelly join our program,” McConnell-Miller said. “She has a Big 12 Conference mentality and with a year to practice and learn our system, she will undoubtedly make an impact on our team.”
Mullaney played in 13 games for Colorado State University during the 2006-07 season, starting in 12, and averaged a team-best 14.5 points per game. She also averaged 3.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists for the Rams and hit 82.8 percent from the free-throw line. Mullaney played against Colorado in Boulder on Nov. 29, scoring a team-high 17 points with eight rebounds in CU's 56-51 win.
She was a four-year letterwinner for The Breck School where she was a two-time All-Tri-Metro Conference selection and the league's Most Valuable Player as a senior. Mullaney was a Miss Minnesota Basketball finalist in 2006 and twice earned honorable mention to the Associated Press All-State team. She was Breck's leading scorer and team MVP in 2005 and 2006.
The arrival of Mullaney will give Colorado five new faces next fall. Odessa (Texas) College standout Dina Piterniece, a 6-2 junior forward from Riga, Latvia, signed in May while Britney Blythe, a 5-9 point guard from San Mateo, Calif., Chelsea Dale, a 6-1 guard/forward from Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., and Brittany Spears, a 6-1 forward from Pasadena, Calif., all signed with Colorado in November.
