September 25, 2007 | Football, General, Tennis, Women's Golf, Soccer, Volleyball

BOULDER-- Football outside linebacker Brad Jones (junior) and tennis player Franziska Jendrian (junior), were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of September 17-23.  This is the first CU athlete of the week award of the year for both Jones and Jendrian. This is Jendrian's fourth career honor which ties her for the most honors for a women's tennis player with current teammate Monica Milewski and former teammate Jessica Vanderdys.

Jones, an East Lansing, Mich. (East Lansing) native, recorded six tackles (four solo) in contributing to Colorado's first shutout in two seasons, a 42-0 win over Miami-Ohio. He also recorded a tackle for loss, two quarterback pressures, two third down stops and one tackle for zero gain. Jones and the Buffalo defense held Miami-Ohio to 139 yards of total offense and helped limit the RedHawks to an impressive 3-of-14 on third down conversion attempts. Football has now swept the male half of the CU Athlete of the Week award for the academic year, as Jones has followed up fellow linebacker Jordon Dizon (Sept. 4 and Sept. 11) and defensive tackle George Hypolite (Sept. 18) in winning the award this year.

Jendrian, a Rodleban, Germany, (Sportgymnasium Magdeburg) native, teamed with Melisa Esposito for three wins in three days to win the Doubles B bracket title at the New Mexico Invitational. Jendrian also advanced to the Singles B bracket final, winning three straight matches, however coming up short falling in the final. The UNM Invite was the first official tennis outing for the Buffaloes in the 2007 fall season.

Others nominated for this week's award were Michelle Wenino (soccer), Schylur Edelman (volleyball) and Julie Kim (women's golf).

Soccer: Michelle Wenino, Junior, Aurora, Colo.

Wenino, a defender, moved up to midfield in overtime against Drake and snapped a four-game scoreless streak with a goal in the 97th minute. Wenino's goal also snapped CU's five-game winless streak. Wenino led Colorado to their fourth shutout of the season.  She has started all eight games and played every minute for CU this season.

Volleyball: Schylur Edelman, Freshman, Sterling, Colo.

Edelman averaged 1.80 kills, 0.40 aces, 0.50 digs, 1.60 blocks and 3.05 points per game as CU dropped a pair of heartbreakers to Baylor and No. 16 Kansas State last week. Edelman led CU with 16 total blocks (one solo and 15 assists) and four service aces in the pair of matches. She was second on the team with a .325 attack percentage and 30.5 points. Edelman also became the first Buff since Austin Zimmerman to record 10 or more blocks in a match (Dec. 1, 2006 vs. No. 3 Washington) and the first since Lara Bossow to record 10 or more block assists (11) in a match (Sept. 15, 2004 vs. Kansas State). Edelman currently leads CU with 1.05 blocks per game.

Women's Golf: Julie Kim, Sophomore, Port Coquitlam, B.C.

Kim led the Buffaloes, finishing in a tied for 18th at eight strokes over par (224) in the 2007 Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate. She shot a one-under par 71 on the final day, playing to three-under through 15 holes. Included in Kim's three-over 75 in the second round was an eagle on her final hole.
