Colorado-Kansas State Quotes

January 23, 2008 | Men's Basketball

CU Head Coach Jeff Bzdelik

GENERAL?“Obviously you aren't going to win a lot of basketball games when you yield 17 offensive rebounds, you have 17 turnovers and you miss 14 free throws.”

ON THE GAME PLAN?“We knew what had to be done, we knew what we had to do and we just didn't execute.  We missed 14 free throws and had 17 turnovers, when you go 0-for-2 from the free throw line it is like having another turnover.  It is another empty possession.  It isn't like we aren't aware of those things; we have been averaging 11 turnovers through the first 3 Big 12 Conference games.  We can't shy away from pressure and we have to help each other out.  Things aren't going to get easier against Missouri; they come harder than Kansas State.  They are going to be real revved up.  We have to stay more disciplined on offense, more disciplined on defense and just more disciplined in all aspects of the game.  We have to block people out, they are all things that we work on, we just have to do it.”

ON MICHAEL BEASLEY?“The difference in the two halves is that he played in the second half.  He sat out half of the first half.  Give him credit, he out hustled us and that is what is so disappointing.  But that falls on me, I'm the head coach.  I have to do a better job of preparing us and motivating us.  I look at myself in the mirror first and I just hope my team does that too.  Everyone needs to figure out the one thing they can get better at and that will really help us.

“We saw him on film.  He's a real talented player and as long as he keeps his head and heart right he can be as good as he wants to be.  He has good hands and feet, he's strong, he's quick, he's disciplined and he seems to stay within their scheme.  He is a very impressive player.”

ON RICHARD ROBY?“He was very aggressive offensively tonight.  He needs to keep doing that as long as he is staying within our scheme.  Most importantly we're a team and we have to stay more disciplined in all aspects of the game.  We just have to do our job?like (Tom) Brady said about the Patriots, everyone does their job.  We have to do our job?we have to box out, and when we're supposed to double Beasley we have to double Beasley.  We have to run our offense, we were undisciplined tonight.  Everyone just needs to do their job.”

ON CU'S POOR FREE THROW SHOOTING?“I remember when I first start coaching in the 70's at Davidson College.  NC State was playing, and Norm Sloan was their coach.  They were playing North Carolina and his team was struggling in the game?especially with handling the ball.  He looked down his bench and told one of his assistants to get on the road and find him a ball handler.  That is kind of where we're at; we have to find some shooters.  We practice them, we shoot them and we work on them.”

Kansas State Head Coach Frank Martin

GENERAL ? “We were sloppy in the first half. You play like you practice and the last two days haven't been good in practice. That's unacceptable. We got a road win in the Big 12, though. You have to take those and be happy. I'm just worried about our team handling success.”

ON STOPPING COLORADO?“We wanted to make them dribble into shots and we tried to keep them out of rhythm. That's what I wanted to try to do tonight.”

ON MICHAEL BEASLEY?“He decided to post up in the second half. That's what we were wanting him to do going into the game. Our guards did a good job of finding him early, but we did that better in the second half.”

ON COLORADO'S DEFENSE?“Some of our inabilities on offense?I think Colorado had something to do with that. We had to play a little more conservatively because of foul trouble.”

ON CONFERENCE PLAY?“I'm happy that we're 3-0 in conference play and I'm pleased with how we played, but we've got 13 more to play.”

Colorado Players

Richard Roby

ON COLORADO'S LACK OF BALL CONTROLL - “We turned the ball over too much. The pressure that they put on us throughout the game led to easy baskets for them.”

ON HIS INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE ? “I play my hardest every night and that's all that I can do. My teammates look for me, and the ultimate goal is to come out on top in every game with a win, but we came out short tonight.”

Marcus Hall

ON SATURDAY'S GAME AGAINST MISSOURI ? “We have to put this game tonight behind us, and concentrate on playing Missouri. We have a very good team coming in here on Saturday.”

Marcus King-Stockton

ON PLAYING AGAINST KANSAS STATE'S MICHAEL BEASLEY ? “We looked to shut him down a little bit more in the second half, but he kept coming. We tried to get him into foul trouble in the first half, but we couldn't do it in the second half. You have to chase him the entire time and be physical with him; but my foul trouble got me in trouble tonight.”

Kansas State Players

Michael Beasley

GENERAL?“We decided to come out in the second half and turn it on. We had some ups and downs, especially in the first half, but we got the win on the road. We just went out there and played?played in coach's system.  Every win is an important win. If we go out there and beat Manhattan Middle School, it's an important win for us.

ON TWO HALVES?“That's just life I guess. If I can put two halves together I'll be set. I had a couple turnovers and a couple bad shots in the first half, but we picked it up in the second half. I picked up two stupid fouls early, but I just have to learn to not be so anxious.”

ON AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT?“We've still got some minor mistakes we need to work on?with all the turnovers we had tonight.”

ON UPCOMING GAMES?“We can't look ahead. If we look ahead to the KU (Kansas) game, we lose the Iowa State game. We just need to play like we have a will to win. We have 13 rounds left of this heavy weight round left.”

ON PERSONAL GAME?“I can go out and score negative 87 points and not be disappointed if I played my best.

“I just turned 19. It's hard to think I'm a man when I walk around with a ?Spongebob' t-shirt on.”
