Colorado-New Mexico Quotes

January 07, 2008 | Men's Basketball

CU Head Coach Jeff Bzdelik

GENERAL?“I first of all want to thank our students and the great crowd we had. Awesome. They were here for us. The energy that was in this building and they were waiting for us to do something and unfortunately we didn't give them enough. We had more to do with losing this game than New Mexico had to do with winning this game. Defensively, we got enough stops and we competed. I think you can see what kind of talent Cory Higgins is. He held Giddins to four points. Offensively, we were totally out of synch and we did not recognize their change of defenses. We knew what to do, but we kind of stumbled through it. No excuses?we got beat.”

ON OFFENSIVE PLAY? “We did not seem to have enough ?juice'. Our cutting wasn't good and New Mexico changed up their defense a little bit and we didn't recognize it. We looked like a deer in the headlights. We had a couple of unforced turnovers. I wish one of those pre-season games we would have played against a team that played man-to-man defense. We'll watch film tomorrow and then we'll see it. It's a process.”

ON FRESHMEN CONTRIBUTIONS? “Levi and Cory are freshman. I thought they competed well. They battled and it's a good thing they were scoring the ball a little bit.”

ON SECOND-HALF ADJUSTMENTS? “I just said at halftime, ?We're beating ourselves and you have to be aggressive in your cuts.' Every cut is to score. I wanted them to push the ball up the court. We have to attack quickly because if you walk the ball up the court you allow the defense to dig in and get organized. If you can get the ball up the court quick you can maybe get one guy turned around.“

ON DEFENSIVE PLAY? “This team (New Mexico) can score a lot of points. They scored 106 points against Colorado last year, so they can shoot the ball. We put ourselves in a position to at least have a chance. There was a light at the end of the tunnel, but the light was another train coming.”

New Mexico Head Coach Steve Alford

GENERAL? “This was a huge win for us tonight. Obviously it's our first game, but we played well start to finish. They made a key run at the end there and we missed some key free throws, but we got the win. Last year we struggled closing out games on the road, but we got the win on the road tonight and we led pretty much start to finish.”

ON THE DEFENSE? “We've really found our identity with our defense. If we can keep guarding like we did tonight we're going to win games. We had five charges on the night?anytime you get five charges that's a good game. We're doing some good things on defense.”

ON PLAY DOWN THE STRETCH? “Toppert made two huge shots for us. I'd like to make those free throws down the stretch. We turned it over a lot and missed too many free throws. If we'd made our free throws it would have been a double-digit win. We made some bad decisions late in the game.”

ON TEAM PLAY? “I liked their demeanor out there tonight. We showed our depth tonight. Jonathan Wills played tremendous in his first game. He earned his starting spot by playing big-time in our exhibition games and by playing big-time tonight.”

ON STOPPING ROBY? “I don't know if it was denying him, we just made him make shots. We really respected their dribble-drive game and tried to force them to make shots.”

ON DRAWING CHARGES? “I couldn't be more pleased with the way our guys guarded tonight. Every charge you take is huge and it gets them in foul trouble. Taking a charge is making a sacrifice and it's unselfish play in basketball.”

Colorado Players

Senior Guard Richard Roby

ON BEING HELD TO ONE POINT--- “In basketball there will always be nights like this. I just couldn't get in a flow, but I can't get down on myself. It's still early in the season. New Mexico switched their defenses up a lot so we couldn't really get in a flow on offense. I wasn't able to get the ball in the high post or in a scoring position.”

ON TAKING POSITIVES FROM THE LOSS--- “For us to play that badly and still have a chance at the end, to still be in it. We beat ourselves tonight with silly turnovers and not executing. These things are fixable. We need to get back on the court, keep working, and fix these things.”

Senior Guard Marcus Hall

GENERAL--- “The loss is disappointing, we're still looking for our identity on offense. Our defense did a pretty good job, holding their top scorer to only 4 points. Most of our turnovers were just carelessness on our part.”

ON FANS--- “As I speak with the whole team, we all want to thank all the fans out there tonight, this early in the season. We wish we could have come through with the win for them and we hope they will come back.”

ON NEW MEXICO'S ZONE DEFENSE--- “We are all having a lot of trouble with the zone defense. We have to figure the zone out, other teams will notice our problems against it so we have to figure it out.”

ON PERSONAL PERFORMANCE--- “Being a senior, I have to bring something out there. After sitting out a year, I was slow coming out but settled down and played better in the second half.”
