Colorado-Iowa State Notes
November 08, 2008 | Football
Quickly Colorado gained a season-high 422 yards, also the first 400-plus game for the Buffs this season; Colorado had 110 yards at halftime but easily exceeded that total with 147 in the third quarter and 165 in the fourth for a 312-yard second half ... Colorado averaged just 2.5 yards on first down in the first half (11 plays, 27 yards), but reversed that course in the second half with a 7.0 figure (19-132) ... CU was 3-of-3 on 3rd-&-1, now 14-of-16 in such situations this season ... CU was bidding to score on just its second opening drive of the season but missed a field goal; Iowa State came back and drove for a three, the sixth score by the opponent on a first possession in '08 (4 TD, 2 FG) ... This marked the third time this year CU did not score in the first half (Texas, Missouri previously) ... Nate Frere's block of Aric Goodman's third quarter PAT kick was the first blocked PAT kick by a CU opponent since Oct. 25, 2003 (Brodney Pool, in a 34-20 win in Boulder by No. 1 Oklahoma) ... CU had the game's only turnover, and per the way the year has gone, it was in the second quarter; 12 of CU's 19 turnovers have happened in the second 15 minutes of play.
CONGRATS Those who noticed that Longmont Times-Call beat writer Patrick Ridgell was absent should know he had a good reason; he and wife Kama welcomed their second child into the world this morning at 4:32 a.m., with daughter Ava Delaney checking in a 7 pounds, 6 ounces and 21 inches long.
CU-IOWA STATE SERIES The second straight game in the series came down to the final play; last year CU could not get two field goal tries off as time expired, this year ISU was at the half-yard line and got off its final play.
WR PATRICK WILLIAMS (4-85, 1 TD) The senior receiver hit the 100/1,000 milestone on the same play, as his 100th reception enabled him to become the 19th player in CU history to record 1,000 or more receiving yards. He is just the 10th to catch 100 passes at CU. He finished the game with a career-high 85 receiving yards and career totals of 102 catches for 1,047 yards).
FIRST CAREER STARTS Two Buffs made their first career starts today, TB Darrell Scott and CB Jimmy Smith. That brings the total to 13 players who have made their first career starts in 2008, including five true freshmen and three redshirt frosh.
QB CODY HAWKINS (29-20-0, 226, 4 TD, 179.95 RATING) In playing just 43 snaps (see breakdown below), he recorded a his career-best single game rating and threw a career best four touchdown passes. His old rating best was 160.3 at Baylor last season, and he had three touchdown passes on three previous occasions. He surpassed the 4,000-yard mark in career passing (4,165), just the sixth player in school history to do so, and his 34 career TD passes is now tied for third all-time with John Hessler (trailing only Joel Klatt 44 and Koy Detmer 40).
