December 16, 2008 | General, Men's Basketball
BOULDER - University of Colorado men's basketball guard Cory Higgins was named CU Athlete of the week for the lone game played during Dec. 8-14. This is his second honor of the season, and for his career.
Higgins, from Danville, Calif. (The Pendleton School [Bradenton, Fla.]/Monte Vista HS), finished with a game- and career-high 33 points leading the Buffs in their 75-56 victory over in-state rival Colorado State. Higgins shot 11-of-16 (.688) from the field.
His 28 second half points were the third best total for a half in school history. Higgins was 9-of-10 shooting in the second half.
Higgins' 33 points overall were the most scored at the Coors Events Center since Michel Morandais recorded 33 versus Missouri on Feb. 22, 2002. Higgins also netted career-highs with in field goals made (11), attempts (16), and three-pointers (3).
The sophomore guard leads CU this season with 18.4 points per game, in addition to rebounding (6.0 rpg.) and steals (1.7 spg.).
In addition to being named CU Athlete of the Week, Higgins was also awarded the Philips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week (Dec. 8-14). The Big 12 Player of the Week is voted on by a panel of national media that covers the conference. It is the first weekly honor for Higgins and the first conference honor for CU this season.
The last Buff to gain Big 12 Player of the Week honors was Richard Roby in the 2005-06 season when he earned back-to-back honors.
